Then again, I don’t know what I’m supposed to think about any of this. Tiola, her parents, the umbras. When we were in my lair, at least I had a pretty good idea of where we were and what was going on. Now that we’re out here, I don’t have a bloody clue.

Something about this place is jogging a memory in the very back of my mind, but I can’t quite put my finger on what that is yet. I don’t even know if it’s a true memory or if it’s just the memory of some previous piece of information that Richard told me once.

The man loved to impart the most obscure scraps of knowledge—the less known something was, the more he loved to share it. Is this strange purple place something like that, or is it something else entirely? Something I know almost nothing about because it’s more important than I ever imagined?

“Dinner’s ready,” Maroly says, ushering us farther into the house. “There’s a bathroom down the hall where you can wash up.”

“Hudson’s a vampire, Mama,” Tiola tells her in a very important voice. “That means he can’t eat our food.”

“A vampire?” Arnst looks at me with new eyes. “We’ve heard stories of vampires, of course, but I’ve never actually gotten to meet one in these parts. Welcome.”

It’s not the reaction I’m used to, but then, given Tiola seemed excited by Grace’s red blood, chances are no one here ever needed to worry about vampires being predators. It’s actually kind of refreshing to have someone think of me as anything other than a threat. “Thank you,” I say, and I mean it.

Maroly turns to Grace with inquisitive eyes. “Are you also a—”

“Oh, no! Definitely not!” Grace answers so emphatically that it’s a little insulting. “I’m just a plain human.”

That’s not true. The longer we’re trapped here, the more convinced I become that there’s something more to Grace than the humanity she is so determined to lay claim to. Not that it matters at the moment, considering I don’t yet know what it is. And I’m not about to contradict her about it. At least not in front of these seemingly kind people who have opened their house to us.

Then again, a quick look at Maroly’s and Arnst’s faces tells me I’m not the only one with doubts about what exactly Grace is. But looks like they’re not going to say anything, either.

“Well then, you must be starving,” Maroly tells her kindly. “Come. I made plenty.”
