“Make sure you use an oven mitt to take it out,” I call after him. Because even though I’m mad at him, it doesn’t mean I want him to hurt himself.

He holds his hand up in what looks like a backward-facing peace sign. At first, I think he’s saying “okay,” but judging from the set of his shoulders, I can’t help thinking he just flipped me off Brit-style.

“Seriously?” I demand. “What the hell is that for?”

He shoots me a look over his shoulder that says I should know.

And just like that, our small moment of peace is over.

“I think it’s fair for me to question what you say,” I tell him, getting off the couch.

“Do you?” He dumps the pie on the stovetop. “So why the fook did you ask me to look if you weren’t going to believe me?”

It’s a good question, one I’m not sure I have an answer to. “I don’t know. I guess I just wanted reassurance that things are okay between Jaxon and me.”

“But now that it looks like they’re not, you get to shoot the messenger?”

When he puts it like that, I feel like I’m the one in the wrong. “I’m sorry. I’m not saying you’re lying. I’m just saying maybe you made a mistake. Maybe you didn’t know where to look—”

“I know where to look.”

“Okay, fine. But you either made a mistake or you’re lying to me. Because Jaxon—” My voice breaks. “Jaxon is—”

“Your mate. Yeah. I got it.” He tosses the oven mitt down on the counter. “Enjoy your pie.” Then he stalks off toward his bed.

As he walks away, his words about the mating bond seem to reverberate inside me, getting louder and more powerful with every second that passes. The mating bond is gone. Gone. Gone.

Terror that his words might be true wells up inside me until it’s all I can think about. And just like that, the tight control I’ve been keeping on my emotions since I ended up in this place dissolves.

My heart starts to pound.

My mind starts to race.

Sweat drips down my back.

“Hey, are you all right?” Hudson asks from across the room, and this time he doesn’t just sound concerned. He sounds alarmed.

“I’m…fine,” I manage to gasp out as panic races through me, but I can barely get the words out because it’s not true. I’m not fine, and it feels like I’ll never be fine again.

I bend over, brace my hands on my knees as I try to suck air into my suddenly starving lungs. It feels like a monster truck is parked on my diaphragm, and the harder I work to breathe, the more difficult it becomes.
