“I see we have a guest,” the staff-bearing Dokkaebi murmurs before the Piper can reply. “I hope that you have not forgotten to introduce us.”

The Piper casts a sparking look over his shoulder in my direction. “Shin Lina, meet Jeong Kang, Park Hana, and Kim Chan.” He cuts a look to Kang, the one with the staff. “That satisfies you, I hope.”

In the presence of these intimidating immortals, I suddenly become overly aware of the grime crusting my skin and the bruises dappling my face. I straighten and say nothing, gripping the hilt of my dagger so tightly that my knuckles ache.

“An honor,” Hana says icily, lips twisting into a mocking smile. Her voice is slick with a distaste that sends me scowling.

“I truly wish that I could say the same,” I reply sweetly before I can stop myself.

Chan tenses as Hana’s eyes flash, but before she can reply, Kang turns to the Piper with a bone-weary expression. “Haneul Rui, you owe me a great explanation.”

My eyes snap to the Pied Piper, who gives Kang a bland smile. Haneul Rui…of course the Piper has a name other than what Sunpo dubs him. Something roils uneasily in my stomach, the danger that I am in suddenly seeming much more real.

“Lina,” the Piper—Rui—says, “and I have struck a little bargain.”

“Dear gods.” Kang’s face pales and his eyes dart to the hourglass upon my neck. “Rui.” I take pleasure in the fact that there is genuine concern in his voice, take pleasure in the idea that perhaps, somehow, I can pose a threat after all.

The emperor ignores him. “Hana, darling.” Rui turns to the dark-haired female. “Show Shin Lina to the guest wing. She could use a bath.”

My cheeks burn red as he and his companions chuckle.

Kang is the only one who remains silent, his brows furrowed in quiet contemplation. He meets my gaze for a moment, and it almost seems as if sympathy swirls in those dark depths.

I scoff. I don’t want his pity. Don’t need his pity.

“This way,” Hana says with an elegant tilt of her head as she begins to make her way out of the throne room, her golden dress swishing across the glossy ground.

I don’t move.

Instead, I turn my gaze to the Pied Piper.

His smile falters slightly as I hold his stare and let him see every bit of the Reaper that is still in me. Let him see every murderous and predatory gleam that shines in my eyes as if to say, You’ve made a fool’s bargain, Your Majesty.

The Piper just curls his lips into a razor-sharp half-moon.

I cock my head and smile an awful smile for a split second before allowing my lips to flatten, allowing my eyes to bore into his.

Seconds pass before his jaw flexes—just slightly.
