When I awoke, Yoonho’s narrowed gaze peered down at me from where I lay on my bed. He had pulled up a chair, and by the look of the circles under his eyes, he’d been there for a while. His graying hair was disheveled, and the wrinkles alongside his thin mouth and hooked nose seemed even more prominent.

I blinked blearily. “What happened?”

Yoonho was silent, yet his eyes spoke for him. I followed them to my right arm. To the heavy white bandages strapping it to my chest, immobilizing one of my body’s most useful limbs.

Oh. Oh.

The training session, the burst of pain, the darkness… I blinked as realization struck me.

“You broke it,” I fired, feeling tears prick at my eyes and threaten to spill out. “You broke it,” I repeated quietly, furiously rubbing my eyes with the back of my left hand and fighting back those tears. “Why did you break it?”

Yoonho’s face turned from haggard to steely. “You need to be lighter on your feet. Quicker. Faster. Had this been a real fight, you wouldn’t have a broken arm. You would be dead. Do you understand, Lina?” He held my gaze, and a heavy silence settled between us, broken only as my anger reached a boiling point.

“How am I supposed to train?” I exploded. Everything I was working for, everything I’d achieved… “My arm is broken!”

“Who said anything about not training?”

“My arm,” I repeated slowly, “is broken.”

“And?” He sat back in his chair. “You have another arm.”

“My left arm,” I retorted, trembling with fury.

“Precisely. Your left arm could use more attention, regardless. Think of this as the perfect opportunity to strengthen dexterity on your nondominant side.”

“It’s not fair,” I cut in, frustration making my voice small and tight. “You have both arms. Fighting you with one arm isn’t fair.”

“Life,” Yoonho replied curtly, his patience finally slipping, “is not fair. Especially in this line of work. You want to survive? Then fight with what you have. And what you have is a perfectly good left arm. You’ll have opponents bigger than you. Stronger than you. More powerful than you. Use every resource you can in order to win.” He ran a hand down his face, which suddenly seemed haggard again. He looked old in that moment; a great deal older than his fifty years. And tired. So very tired. “You’re on your way to becoming the Talons’ greatest asset. Prove to me that you can be.”

I clenched my jaw tight enough that it popped. But he was right. I knew he was. And, like any petulant fifteen-year-old, I hated him for it. “Fine,” I spat out. “I will.”

And I did.

…

Fighting the Pied Piper will be like fighting without an arm.

And a leg.

And eyes, or ears.
