As a blue flame dances in the Piper’s glare, I’m reminded of the whispers that the Emperor of Dokkaebi is the only being who possesses the ability to summon a flame of indigo. To summon Dokkaebi fire, so white-hot that it is as cold as a bitter winter, and ten times as biting.
For a moment, I think he plans to summon that flame, to wield it against me…but the burning fire in his gaze quickly recedes, replaced by cold amusement. “I suggest that you close your eyes, little thief,” he says in a feather-soft whisper that caresses the side of my cheek.
It’s the feeling of his breath against my skin that jerks me from my reverie of terror, flooding my body with scorching adrenaline and boiling hatred. “I suggest you let go of me,” I snarl from behind gritted teeth before lifting myself up on my tiptoes, jerking my head back the way Yoonho taught me, and slamming my forehead against his hard enough that I see stars. A normal man would stumble backward, disoriented and weakened, leaving an opening for me to gain the upper hand and disembowel him in a few quick movements.
But as a dizzying pain racks my head, the Pied Piper merely chuckles, not at all fazed by my attack. If anything, he seems amused as I gasp weakly for breath. Dokkaebi heads, it seems, are infuriatingly resistant to blunt trauma.
A warm, wet trickle slowly makes its way down my forehead.
“And what exactly,” I hear him whisper mockingly, “was that supposed to accomplish?” One of his fingers, cold with rings, slowly brushes away the droplet of blood. I can feel him silently laughing at me as I choke out a vicious curse—
But then the ground seems to drop beneath our feet, and we are falling—falling, falling, falling through shadows and darkness.
A scream of pure terror erupts from my lips, answered by a soft, wicked laugh as we jolt from side to side, forever tumbling through the eternal night.
Through returning vision, I glimpse flashes of Sunpo speeding by through the darkness.
The marketplace, the dingy taverns, pleasure halls, and the Blackbloods’ giwajip… But then they are gone, replaced by a blinding light and a rush of heat that sends me gasping.
My boots hit ground.
Solid ground.
The impact is hard enough that it sends a wave of sickness through my body, but I shove it down as my eyes adjust to the quickly fading burst of white light—and to the Dokkaebi looking down at me, glimmers of amusement dancing across his fine features.
I swallow hard.
There is no use trying to deny that this Dokkaebi is as beautiful as he was this morning on the rooftop. His golden skin, his inky black hair, the cheekbones that could have been carved by the gods themselves… All of it is gorgeous in a way that only an inhuman can be.
