“I’m going to,” he answers as he reaches into the box and pulls out my favorite of Miss Velma’s cookies. He takes an enthusiastic bite, his eyes going wide at what I know from experience is the perfect ratio of cookie dough and chocolate on his tongue.
“That’s…”
“Amazing,” I fill in for him. “Delicious. Perfection.”
“All of those,” he agrees. “And more.”
He smiles at me before taking another bite of cookie, and as the wind blows past us, ruffling his perfect pompadour for the very first time, he looks different than usual. Younger. Happier. More vulnerable.
Maybe that’s what has everything inside me freezing as questions begin to dance around the edges of my mind. “Wait a minute,” I murmur as things I learned at Katmere start filtering through all the emotions that have been bouncing around inside me because I’m home.
“How can you eat that cookie?” I ask. “Jaxon ate a strawberry in front of me once, and he said it made him completely sick. How can you stand here eating two huge cookies like it’s nothing?”
Hudson doesn’t say anything. Instead, he just looks at me as the happiness drains from his eyes only to be replaced by a wariness I don’t understand.
Until suddenly I do.
“None of this is real, is it?” I whisper as horror washes over me. “This is just another trick? Just another way for you to—”
“It’s not a trick,” Hudson interrupts, and his voice sounds strange, almost pleading. And maybe I could focus on that if Miss Velma’s cookie shop wasn’t flickering like a bad wifi connection right behind him.
For a moment, the roar of the ocean gets louder in my ears, so loud that it feels like it’s going to come crashing down on us at any second. But even as I brace myself to get soaked, the roaring fades away to nothingness.
As does the cookie in my hand.
As does Miss Velma.
As does everything and everyone but Hudson and me.
Even worse, we’re back in the dark. At least until Hudson flips a switch and the lights come back on.
Even before my eyes adjust, I know where we are. And I finally know what happened.
“It was all just a memory, wasn’t it?” I ask him. It’s not even an accusation at this point, just a statement of fact. “Somehow you got in my head, and you stole a memory.”
“I didn’t just get in your head, Grace. And I didn’t steal anything. You gave it to me.”
His words hit me like a match hits gasoline, and a fire races over my skin, pours through my body, fills me up until all I can see or taste or feel is red-hot rage. “I would never do that!” I spit at him. “I would never just give you something precious to me like this.”
