Relief courses through me, so powerful, so overwhelming, that I nearly break down in tears. Because Hudson and I are in his lair, and I remember everything.
I remember the Shadow Realm.
I remember falling in love with Hudson.
I remember that last horrible battle and the shadow cockroach in my mouth.
And I remember Souil exploding into a billion points of light. Time magic.
I remember looking up at the pretty lights, thinking how they looked like the fairy lights that Adarie strings up during the festival and how fitting it was that the mayor finally made the town square twinkle.
We won! We stopped Souil from ruining two worlds.
I start to wonder why we’re in Hudson’s lair again when I remember something else…
I remember the time magic floating in the sky, swirling and dancing and then re-forming. And I knew, I just knew, that energy was coming for me. Something inside me was vibrating, calling to the time magic, and it wanted to come home.
It felt right to raise my arms, to welcome the magic inside me.
But just before it could connect with me—Hudson faded in front of me and took that arrow of time magic straight through his heart and into mine.
My knees go weak, and my breath stills in my chest.
Oh my God. What if he really doesn’t remember? What am I going to do?
Horror rolls through me at the thought, and I want to dive back onto the couch and wait for him to wake up. Because if he doesn’t remember me—remember us—I don’t know how I’ll cope.
But sitting on the couch worrying about what Hudson knows or doesn’t know isn’t going to help me much, either. So I tell myself to stop being a baby and just go do what needs to be done.
I’m here and I remember, don’t I? Is it such a stretch to think that Hudson might, too? Lightning has been known to strike twice…and so have miracles.
Part of me thinks I’ve already had my own miracle—I’m here. Healthy and relatively happy.
When I get to his bed, I pull off the pillow that’s covering Hudson’s head. And I look at him, just look at him.
He doesn’t seem any worse for wear after everything we just went through. No bugbites, no claw marks. I look down at my own arms and realize I don’t have any marks, either. The similarity has to be a good thing, right?
Not that I’ll ever know unless I finally work up the nerve to just woman up and ask him.
