I have one second to tell myself that she won’t, that she wouldn’t dare after everything we’ve been through. Except even as I try to convince myself of that, I know it’s not true.
Because this is Grace, my beautiful, wonderful, unbelievably unselfish Grace. And she could never do anything else, not as long as she had breath in her body.
And not as long as she knew she could somehow, some way help another person.
There’s a part of me that wants to hate her for what she’s about to do. That wants to blame her for leaving me after making me love her so bloody much.
But the truth is, I always knew what I was getting into. Because the girl who does this—the girl who doesn’t think twice about sacrificing herself to save everyone else—that’s my Grace. It’s always been my Grace.
That year we were in the lair, I saw all her memories—including ones of incidents she barely remembers. They were all right there for me to see and, like her with my journals, once I got started, I couldn’t stop.
Not when every memory was another piece in the puzzle of who she is. And not when every single story taught me just how kind and thoughtful and wonderful Grace really is. Even the memories she’s ashamed of, even the things she thinks make her a not-so-great person, make me love her more because she has something no one in the Vampire Court has ever shown an ounce of—remorse.
I don’t love Grace because she’s perfect all the time. Hell, no one can make me want to pull my hair out faster than her sometimes. I love Grace because she wants to be better, always strives to be the best she can. That doesn’t mean she never has a bad day. It means her bad days are not what define her. It’s her stubbornness, her willingness to learn from her mistakes, and her strength to pick herself up and always do better.
She makes me want to be a better man—someone worthy of her.
She’s more than I ever hoped for in a mate. And definitely more than I ever deserved.
As I watch the energy swirl around and around, getting tighter and tighter, I feel tears burn the back of my eyes. I blink them away, refusing to give in to them right now. I haven’t cried in a lot of years, and I’m not going to start now. Not when Grace still needs me.
And she does need me. Even now.
