“Are you sure this is going to work?” Nyaz asks as we wrap them both up as tightly as we can—though for very different reasons.
“It should,” Hudson tells him. “The second Artelya wakes the dragon, you’ll all pull the ropes to hold the dragon down so I can kill her. In the meantime, Grace and the others will pull Artelya down so the flames that are already heading toward her won’t touch her—if we’re lucky. They’re really close already to her, but we have to try. It’ll all be a question of timing in the end.”
“And your ability to kill a dragon this big and powerful,” Tinyati’s husband tells him as he shifts the sword we gave him back and forth in his hands. “I know we’re supposed to be backup, but maybe I should be on the other side from you. Just in case. We can kill the beast together.”
“I’m not going to say no.” Hudson flashes a quick grin. “I’ll take any help you want to give me. From what I understand, this beast is feral.”
“She is,” I tell him—and myself. Because even though I know it’s the right thing to do, even though it’s the only way to save all the people in Adarie plus who knows how many thousands of people in my realm, it’s still hard to think of killing a living creature who isn’t actively attacking me.
Artelya assures me that will change the second Asuga wakes up. That she’s incredibly powerful, incredibly mean, and she’s had a thousand years of hunger beating at her chest. There’s no way I can give her a chance to be free.
“The dragon’s ropes are done,” the chupacabra says, stepping away.
“So are Artelya’s,” Arnst comments as he does the same thing.
“Okay, so this is it. We’re going to do this now, and then the energy will seek out Souil at his house. And hopefully this ends quickly—”
Hudson finishes. “And you will all be free from living under the threat of him destroying Adarie forever.”
“Don’t underestimate the Shadow Queen, though,” I warn them. “She’s going to try to help him any way she can.”
“Which means we need to keep her off Grace and Hudson so they can kill the dragon and end this thing once and for all,” Nyaz says. “We can do that, right?”
Everyone nods their assent. And I turn back to the dragon—to Artelya—with only one thought in mind. Please, please, let this work.
But before I can ask Artelya to unfreeze as we’ve discussed, the werewolves stop dead and start sniffing the air.
They lift their noses, and I get a very bad feeling in my stomach. “What’s going on?” I ask, already afraid of what the answer is going to be.
