“I’ve had a long time to think about this,” she says, “and I just can’t get over how insistent Souil was that I bring no one else with us, that I not risk loosing another dragon on this realm.” Her eyes narrow on mine. “When I killed the first dragon, his magic seemed to seek Souil out. Souil appeared to have no control over it. What if he’s a magnet for time magic? And what if he can’t help absorbing too much magic, even if it would kill him?”
My eyebrows shoot into my hairline. “Do you really think it’s possible?”
She nods. “That man is arrogant as hell. I just can’t believe he would only bring exactly the number of dragons he needs to increase his power and return when he could have had a sky full of them. If I’d even brought my sister with me, he’d have had a chance to return home by now. Instead, he’s apparently been waiting centuries to get home.” She raises one brow. “Seems kind of foolish, if you ask me.”
I turn to stare at the dragon now no more than twenty feet in front of us. Could she be right? Could the answer to stopping Souil really be in simply giving him more time?
But before I can let myself hope, I remember that we cannot release Asuga regardless.
“I’m sorry,” I say. And I am. I saw how close the flames in the statue were to her head. I can’t believe it didn’t even occur to me that fortifying herself with the dragon had also acted to save her from Asuga’s dragon breath. My arm had been singed when I wasn’t solid stone, so I know we’re only impervious to the flames in our solid stone form. I shake my head. “We’ll find another way. We cannot risk your life, too.”
Artelya’s eyebrows slash down and, if possible, she looks offended I’d even suggest such a thing. “Of course I will release the dragon if you agree to kill her.”
I start, “But—”
“Will my death save innocent lives?” she asks, but we both know the answer, so she continues. “Then it will be my honor to save them.”
I must look horrified at the suggestion because she squares her shoulders, turns to face me fully, the sword no longer resting casually across her shoulder but gripped in one of her powerful hands between us.
“I will forgive you this, as you say you have never known another gargoyle, but Grace—” She shakes her head at me, and I suddenly feel very small. She bangs her sword on her shield and the sound echoes against the sea as she says, “Gargoyles are protectors. It is our sacred duty to protect those who cannot protect themselves.”
