Now I kind of wish I’d asked Hudson to come with me to do this.
He’d stayed behind to work with Nyaz on the other problem we have… Namely, even if I’m able to get the gargoyle to free the dragon, how the hell do we get her to attack Souil?
In addition, Nyaz reported that Souil was holed up in his mansion with some sort of time force field around it. Anyone who attacked got transported in time. Some only a few feet backward, others to where they were days ago. So they’re working on a plan to combat the force field and get Souil out in the open where the dragon can attack him.
It’s exactly what he needs to be doing at this point, but that means I’m coming out here to face another gargoyle—the first gargoyle I’ve ever met—all on my own. It’s a scary proposition.
Not as scary as having the Shadow Queen descend on the town and do who knows what to anyone who opposes her. And definitely not as scary as letting Souil loose in the universal timeline.
But it’s no picnic, either, especially since I have absolutely no idea what I’m supposed to say to her at this point.
I glance back at Hudson, who’s standing at the door of the inn with Nyaz, greeting people who’ve come to help work on their part of the plan. Hudson grins when he sees me looking, gives me a little “go get ’em, tiger” wave. But Nyaz appears concerned, and when he leans over to say something to Hudson, I’m certain he’s asking if I can do this.
Just knowing he’s thinking that gets my back up, even as Hudson nods in a “hell yeah she can” kind of way.
I smile at that, wait for his eyes to come back to mine. Then I stick my chin up in the air so he knows I’m serious and call out, “I’ve got this.”
Because I do. I really, really do. And it’s nice to finally have someone who believes that as much as I do.
I’ve spent my whole life being underestimated.
By my parents, who didn’t think I was strong enough to handle knowing who or what I am.
By Macy and Uncle Finn, who didn’t trust me to be able to handle knowing what Katmere Academy was really about.
Even by Jaxon, who thinks I need to be protected against anything and everything that might pose a threat to me.
But I’m done being underestimated. I’m done being discounted. I’m done having people think I’m not good enough or strong enough or powerful enough to do what needs to be done.
