“You mean all of you are cursed to live in the shadows of our world without ever being able to go back?” I ask, feeling a little sick.

“That’s the thing,” Nyaz tells me. “Most of us don’t want to go back. We’ve been here for a thousand years, and we’re happy. We have families, jobs, a community we love. When our ancestors first got here, they would have done anything to go home. But we took what was supposed to be a prison and turned it into a paradise. We’ve built Noromar—and Adarie, in particular—into something better than a paradise. We’ve built it into our home. And now that there’s a chance we might be forced to leave, we don’t want to.”

“Can’t you just stay?” I ask. “Refuse to go anywhere and stay right here in the shadows and continue living your lives?”

“That’s what we want to do. But some people remember stories of the old realm. They’re tired of living the way we do here. Tired of eating purple vegetables growing out of purple dirt, tired of living under a purple sky.” He pauses. “Tired of only seeing a sunset four times a year—of only seeing darkness every three months. They want to go home.

“Add in the fact that we’ve had our favorite holiday attacked and ruined by time dragons two festivals in a row, and is it any wonder some people are ready to get the hell out of here? But if they do that, how will we fit in the other world now? It’s been a thousand years since we were there. It’s not our home anymore. This is our home.

“But now that the mayor has the power he needs to cross between worlds and reset the curse, we’re in real trouble. Because not only will he be risking every single person who lives in the Shadow Realm, he’ll be risking Noromar itself. We can’t let that happen—not to the only real home we’ve had in a millennium.”

His voice has risen a little out of its regular, non-excitable, “take everything in stride” tone to one of urgency. But surprisingly, there’s no fear to go along with that urgency. Just a fervent determination that has me taking a big mental step back. Because I don’t like the way he’s staring at me or what that stare might mean.

Hudson must have the same feeling that I do, because he scoots his chair a little closer to mine. He holds Nyaz’s gaze with frigid blue eyes. And then he asks, “What are you trying to tell us?”

Nyaz simply whispers, “We have a secret weapon.”

Hudson’s face goes blank instantly. “By secret weapon, I assume you are not referring to Grace in any way.”
