It’s hard to swallow with his mace digging into my chin and throat, harder even to speak. But since he’s not relenting—every second I don’t answer, the mace presses a little deeper—I finally manage to squeak out, “Yes.”

“Good.” He smiles ruefully before removing the mace from my throat and leaning back against one of the gazebo pillars, his weight on his forearm. “Because I’ve been waiting a long time for you.”

“For me?” I ask, confused.

“Not for you specifically.” He waves a hand, as if telling me not to get too big a head out of this. As if I would. “But I have been providing sanctuary and collecting otherworlders in Adarie for centuries, waiting for a big enough rift in space-time—and the time dragon that comes with it.”

“So you really were—”

He shoots me a warning look, and I shut up. The guy is already worked up and violent. I figure there’s no need to antagonize him any worse when Hudson and my friends can’t defend themselves.

“At first, it was difficult to get people to come here. But after rumors spread of the Shadow Queen hunting visitors and this idyllic sanctuary city, it certainly got easier.”

“So the mayorship, everything, was just a ruse to attract a time dragon to kill the people who trust you?” I ask, horrified, though I don’t know why. With everything he’s revealed, I kind of thought I’d be beyond horror, but nope. It just keeps coming.

“If they’re foolish enough to trust me, I’m smart enough to exploit it,” he answers in an oh-so-reasonable tone. “Besides, what do they have to complain about? I made their pathetic little lives amazing. Look at this place, at what I’ve given them!”

“I don’t think that counts if you’re willing to sacrifice them whenever you want.”

“Not whenever I want,” he thunders before lowering his voice again. “I’ve been here for a millennium, waiting. Just waiting for a large enough dragon, for so long that I almost gave up. I almost resigned myself to being stuck in this realm. But then I heard of two strangers mentioning dragons, and I knew my long wait was finally over. And boy, you really delivered, Grace.”

This time his grin is happy—which somehow makes this whole experience even more macabre and terrible. What kind of person can smile like that, minutes after brutally murdering an innocent man?

“But do you know what the problem with self-sacrificing types is?” he says, rubbing his chin musingly. “You’re always willing to die to protect others, but you’re never willing to take the deal that will save your lives.”
