Grace mumbles something else in her sleep, and I lean over to try to figure out what it was, but then she laughs and I decide it doesn’t matter. Because it feels like she’s happy, too. And that, maybe, I’m the one who made her that way.

Talk about another strange feeling.

I wait for her to say something more or to laugh again so I can see the way her eyes crinkle up at the corners and the way her cheeks flush that soft pink I like so much. During our months in the lair, I spent a lot of time thinking about that soft pink. Imagining what it tasted like. Imagining running my lips along her cheeks while I whispered things to make her blush.

Just thinking about it has me leaning down, pressing a soft kiss to her cheek just to see if it will make her talk again.

It doesn’t, but it does have her kicking off the sheet and comforter I just covered her with. It’s the third time she’s shoved them away in the last couple of hours, so I don’t try to put them on her yet again. Instead, I prop myself on my elbow and let myself do something I rarely get the chance to do when she’s awake.

I study all the sweet and sexy little freckles she’s got in places that aren’t currently covered by her sleep shirt.

There are just enough of them—tiny little dots clustered on her cheeks and her hands, in small groupings on her upper thighs and the curves of her shoulders—that they feel like secrets left for me to discover.

I lower my head and trace my lips across a constellation of them on her inner arm.

Her only response is an incomprehensible moan before she rolls over and buries her face in her pillow. But that just gives me access to all the freckles on the backs of her thighs—a whole interstellar web just waiting for me to connect them with a soft, slow slide of my finger over her skin.

“What is it with you and my freckles?” she asks. Her voice is muffled because her face is still buried in her pillow, but she doesn’t seem disturbed by my attention. Just curious.

“I love them,” I tell her. “They’re like my own little universe right here on your skin. A tiny piece of you that only I get to touch and kiss and appreciate.”

She shakes her head, but this time when I run my finger over her freckles, the noise she makes is more purr than complaint. Which only encourages me to do it again.

I’m just starting to think I’m getting somewhere—Grace rolls over and buries her face in the curve of my neck and wraps an arm around me—when her alarm goes off.
