It doesn’t sound like a trap, but it definitely feels like one. Still, what am I supposed to say besides, “Pretty good,” because it was, if you don’t count the fact that my head’s been trying to blow up for most of it and I think Grace is about to crush my heart into a billion tiny pieces. At least that pain will take my mind off my head, I reason.

“Is that a question?” Her voice is quiet, but that doesn’t stop her words from ringing through the room.

“I don’t know,” I counter just as quietly. “Is it?”

She doesn’t answer, only stares at me for several beats. Just when I’m about to break the silence and ask her to put me out of my misery, she walks away. Goes into the bathroom and shuts the door. Seconds later, the shower turns on.

And yeah, message received. She is definitely pissed about the blue string.

I swear long and low and run a hand through my hair. Then I sit on the edge of the bed, try and reassure myself I always knew this is how it could play out. I’d hoped she was growing to feel something for me. Something to build on. I guess I got it wrong.

Despite feeling sick from her obvious anger, I call down to Nyaz and ask him to send up a grilled tago cheese and some fruit for Grace.

The minutes tick by as I wait impatiently for Grace to get out of the shower, but she’s decided to take her time. I can only assume it’s because psychological warfare is a thing. Cyrus taught me that a long time ago.

Briefly, I think about hauling arse out of here. About just walking away and leaving her to whatever mood she’s in. Things will go better for both of us if we’re calm when we have whatever argument is brewing. It’s not like I planned for this. Besides, it takes two to make this happen.

As I sit here, waiting on the meltdown Grace is clearly working herself into, I start to get a little angry myself.

By the time Grace finally emerges from the bathroom, one of the waiters from downstairs knocks on the door with her grilled cheese.

“I ordered you dinner,” I tell her as I set the plate on the table near the window. “I thought you might be hungry.”

“What about you?” she asks, brows raised. “Are you hungry?”

And there it is. I barely resist the urge to wipe a frustrated hand down my face.

“No,” I tell her truthfully. The thought of feeding in this moment makes me nauseous. “I’m not.”

“You’re not?” She quirks a brow. “I don’t believe you.”
