It’s such an un-Hudson-like pose that I know immediately what’s going on. I also don’t need to see his face to know it’s bad. Or to feel the hunger and fatigue beating away at him.

As much as I’ve been practicing lately to try to control my stone forms, Hudson has been helping the mayor build reinforcements in Adarie for when the dragon comes back. He even faded all the way to a nearby village to bring cases of steel bolts back to reinforce the front gate. All while working two jobs and still having time to spend with me.

And I knew he was hungry—I just didn’t know how bad it was. Every time I’ve tried to get him to feed, much like get him to talk about our relationship, he’s changed the subject or insisted he was fine.

But now I know that I need to be doing something more. Because I can’t leave him hurting, can’t leave him suffering without trying to help him.

I also know he doesn’t want me to see him like this. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be fronting at home the way he is. I’ve not seen this level of fatigue since the mountains when he had no choice but to let me see.

I think about turning around and just going back to work before he sees me—this isn’t the place for the confrontation I know is coming—but at the same time, I need to make sure he’s okay. So instead of sneaking up to show him my gargoyle form as I originally intended, I make sure to cough a little as I rattle the door.

By the time I walk outside, Hudson is standing and smiling at me, no trace of distress anywhere about him. At least not if I don’t look too closely. Smokey, on the other hand, is running around his feet at top speed, chittering to herself. I may not be able to talk to her, but I know when she’s distressed. She’s obviously as worried about Hudson as I am.

If I do look closely, I can see a shadow in his eyes and a few tiny lines of strain around the corners of his mouth.

“Look at you! I knew you’d figure it out again!” he tells me with a smile that doesn’t quite chase the pained shadows from his eyes. “How did you do it?”

“I was looking inside myself and I saw all these strings—like what you must have seen when you were looking for the mating bond with Jaxon. And there, in the middle of all the different colors, was a platinum string. And I just knew, even before I touched it, that that string is for my gargoyle.”

“Wait.” Now he just looks stunned. “You saw the strings? All of them?”
