I can’t even get him to feed.
Muttering under my breath, I find a seat in the middle of town square to eat my lunch. The library is right across the street from me, and as I glance at it, I wonder if I should pop in and say hi to Hudson. School is out today, so he said he had some research he wanted to do.
Time is ticking down for both of us, and I’m terrified we won’t be ready when darkness falls again.
When the dragon comes again.
It’s still a ways off, but I can’t help thinking about it. Can’t help thinking if my gargoyle will be ready to fight during the attack. Because there’s no way I can just sit by and let my new friends die. Not when they’ve all been so amazing to me. The troubadours, my boss Tinyati, Nyaz. Even Dolomy the librarian has started to warm up to me, though Hudson is still her favorite.
Then again, he’s pretty much everyone’s favorite these days. Smokey rarely lets him out of her sight, even when he’s at work. Nyaz invites him for his weekly card game with the guys. And Lumi is giving him lessons on the trumpet in exchange for French lessons while Caoimhe and I try out local restaurants.
All in all, we’re settling in really well as we build a life.
The trash can is next to the statue of the woman and the dragon, and as I stand here looking at her, I realize something I’ve not really noticed before… She has horns.
My heart is pounding in my chest. This is a memorial of a gargoyle fighting a dragon!
I make a mental note to ask Hudson if anyone’s told him anything about this statue before. Surely someone knows why it was built.
Maybe gargoyles are just naturally capable of tearing rifts in time. Maybe she came to the Shadow Realm by accident like I did.
My stomach suddenly pitches and shimmies. I’m the only gargoyle in Adarie—which means this one, whoever she was, lost to the time dragon. I swallow the bile rising in my throat and toss the rest of my uneaten sandwich into the trash.
I don’t like thinking about that. Don’t like imagining her losing, dying, becoming anything less than the super-fierce gargoyle standing in front of me, staring down a dragon.
Eyes defiant, mouth set, head lowered for battle, giant horns at the ready. She’s a badass in every way a woman can be a badass, and there’s a part of me that wants to be just like her when I grow up.
No sooner do I think it than something happens inside me.
