She focuses on me for the first time. “Seriously?” She throws a shirt at me. “Can you put some clothes on, please?”
“This is my dressing room. I’m supposed to be undressed in here. That’s actually what it’s for.”
“Really?” she hisses. “You think this is the time to mansplain to me what a dressing room is for?”
“Sometimes it’s just explaining, not mansplaining. And I only explained because you seem confused about the whole ‘what people do in here’ thing.”
“For the love of God, will you please just put some clothes on?” She throws another shirt my way.
“Careful, Grace. You keep trying to cover me up, and I’m going to start thinking my half-naked physique makes you uncomfortable,” I tease.
“It does,” she answers, deadpan. “It makes me want to climb you like a tree, wrap my legs around your hips, and persuade you to have your way with me.”
“Um.” For the second time today—and pretty much the second time ever—I’ve got absolutely no comeback for Grace. Except, “The inn is just around the corner.”
And just like that, her tone goes from joking to something charged with electricity. My mind is racing. My heart is racing. Fuck, everything is racing. I glance at the door, consider swooping Grace into my arms and fading us back to our room.
But then Tinyati is speaking, and the moment is gone. “Grace, where are you? I’ve got more dresses for you to try on. I can’t wait to see you in the taffeta!”
Grace grabs my hand and mouths, Be very quiet.
“Grace?” There’s a knock on the door, followed by Tinyati calling, “Hudson, is Grace in there with you?”
“Too late. She’s found me,” Grace whispers huffily. “I rescind my offer, and now you’ll never know why I came in here in the first place. Aren’t you sorry you wasted all that time going on about your rock-hard abs?”
“To be fair, I never mentioned my rock-hard abs,” I whisper back.
“Grace? Hudson?” Now Tinyati sounds concerned.
“You might as well have,” Grace sniffs. Then she calls, “You can just put them in my dressing room, Tinyati! I’ll be there in a second!” She turns back to me and whispers, “Taffeta. Pray for me.”
“Sorry, I’m in mourning,” I tell her.
She laughs. “As you should be. Next time, shut up faster.” And then she walks out, leaving me alone with a pile of clothes and a bunch of thoughts that make trying on those clothes very uncomfortable.
Forty-five minutes later, we walk out of Tinyati’s boutique loaded down with bags. We each decided on some new jeans, shirts, and underwear, but when we brought them up to the counter, Tinyati had a fit. I explained to her that we’re pretty close to broke, which is why we’re being so sparing with our purchases.
