Tears bloom in my eyes—for him and for all we’ve lost—but I blink them away before they can fall. Because it’s not just the mating bond that has disappeared. So has the girl I was when I first got to Katmere Academy.

That Grace was lost, unsure, determined to protect herself but not having a clue how to do it.

I’m a gargoyle now. A freaking gargoyle.

I fight dragons. Not well, mind you, but I fight them, and I win. Sometimes.

I know if I had stayed at Katmere, if this weird thing—whatever it is—hadn’t happened, Jaxon and I could have had a good life together. If things had stayed the same and we had had the time to really learn each other and love each other, maybe we could have grown together and the mating bond would have held.

I’ll never know, though, because that didn’t happen. I ended up here, so we didn’t stay together. We didn’t grow together. The mating bond broke and so did we.

This last year and change has taken me on a different path. It’s helped me grow and become, if not a different person, then at least someone who sees things differently than she used to. Someone who is different than she used to be.

And a lot of that growth is because of Hudson.

He pushes me, challenges me, and definitely never lets me get away with anything.

Which is why, mating bond gone or not, somewhere in the last several months, as I’ve changed and grown and come to accept that I will never, ever see Jaxon again, I’ve also fallen out of love with him. That’s not something I can change. And I’m not sure it’s something I’d even want to change if I could. He’s a good person. He deserves someone who can love him as completely and passionately as he loves them.

The way the old Grace used to love him.

But that’s life, isn’t it? We change and grow and some people follow that journey with us, become an integral part of it, and others go on their own paths.

“Hey,” Hudson says in a voice hoarse from sleep. “You okay?”

His smile has faded, and in its place is a blankness I haven’t seen from him since those first months we were trapped together. Back then, he’d retreat behind a blank wall regularly. I never understood what caused it back then. But laying here, watching him now that I know him the way I do, I can’t help but think it’s a defense mechanism. That he’s shielding himself from some kind of blow.

The fact that he still thinks that blow might come from me breaks my heart.
