Which means Hudson missed out on all the same milestones I did, and yet, here he is, adulting like a pro. I really need to step up, stop my moaning, and figure out what I want to do for a living. Hudson is right. I can do this. Maybe.
Caoimhe wiggles her eyebrows. “You should listen to the vampire. He knows what he’s talking about.”
“You only say that because you think he’s sexy.” It’s my turn to roll my eyes.
“He is sexy,” she says. “And his brain is definitely part of that sex appeal. So listen to him. And stop worrying so much. Things will work out. They always do.”
“Really?” I make a face. “You do realize you’re talking to someone who accidentally crossed the barrier and is stuck in another realm forever, right?”
“And you’ve got me for a best friend and a sexy vampire for a…roommate.” She wiggles her brows. “I’m just saying it could be worse.”
The way she says “roommate” has little shivers racing along my skin.
Hudson and I haven’t talked about what almost happened after the audition. And not because I haven’t tried, either.
He’s always up before me, or goes to bed after me, or—even more irritating—changes the subject. For a guy who wanted to have it out in a cave not too long ago, he seems determined now not to discuss what’s going on between us at all.
And something is happening here.
You could cut the tension between us with a fucking chain saw.
I sigh. I should probably be thankful he’s giving me space.
Ever since the mayor left no doubt that Hudson and I were never leaving Noromar, I’ve been trying to figure out what that means for me personally. I had dreams back home and now they’re all gone, I know that. But dreams aren’t something you can just throw out like the trash and not feel their loss. I need to replace them with new ones.
And getting a job that I enjoy, that I’m actually decent at, would be a good start.
Maybe then I’ll be able to face how I feel about Hudson—what he’s beginning to mean to me.
I glance up at the store I’m standing in front of and decide, What the hell. Maybe the local watchmaker needs someone to run his cash register or something.
“Hey!” Caoimhe calls from halfway down the block. “See you and your fine man at the Starfall Festival tonight?”
I’m about to tell her Hudson isn’t my man, fine or otherwise, but the reminder that Noromar is about to have three straight days of darkness makes my stomach flutter like leaves in a summer wind. I swallow. Hard.
Hudson hasn’t fed since the cave, and I can’t help but wonder if he will tonight.
