She raises one eyebrow in question. “What happened to the farm?”
“Turns out I’m really, really bad at farming.” I shake my head as I remember everything that happened during my two days at the nut farm. “Really, really bad.”
“What about the receptionist for the doctor’s office?”
“After two days, I was politely asked to reconsider my desire to work in an office setting,” I tell her glumly. “I kept pressing the wrong buttons and hanging up on patients. I also maybe forgot to charge a patient before they left and then charged the next double.”
She laughs, then tries to muffle it behind a cough when I mock-glare at her. “Wasn’t there one more place you tried?”
“Yeah.” I think back on my brief afternoon at the candle-making factory. “I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Okay, then.” She holds her hands up in mock surrender.
“I never knew I was so incompetent,” I tell her after blowing out a frustrated breath. “I mean, how can I be so bad at so many things?”
“It’s okay. You’ll find your thing.” She dumps the last of her shaved ice in the trash can we pass. “It just takes time.”
“What if I don’t have a thing?” I ask as I do the same. “Because to be honest, right now I don’t even care if it is my thing. I just want to get a job that I’m not absolutely terrible at. Surely that’s not too much to ask.”
“The guys and I could teach you how to juggle—”
“Definitely not,” I cut her off with a chuckle.
“Hey, maybe you’ll be really good—”
“No,” I say again.
She sighs. “Okay, well, I’ll keep my eyes out for any help wanted signs around town. In the meantime, I’ve got to go meet up with the guys to practice for the festival tonight.”
“You need more practice?” I ask. “You guys already sound amazing!”
She rolls her eyes. “Yes, Mother, practice makes even the best musicians better. You could tag along if you want. As long as you don’t sing.”
I laugh. “Tempting as that offer is, I think I’m going to keep pounding the pavement. Maybe there’s some store I haven’t filled out an application for yet.”
“Probably a lot of stores.” Caoimhe leans in for a very uncharacteristic side-armed hug. “Don’t worry. You’ll find something.”
“Yeah, that’s what Hudson says.” I shake my head. “Of course, that’s easy for him to say. He found his perfect forever job immediately.”
And he did. He reported for duty at the hardware store for his second day, and the owner mentioned how sad she was that her daughter’s teacher had retired that week. Hudson went straight to the school on his lunch break and filled out an application.
