Except that’s not cool. She’s not some random blood donor on the street. And she’s not my person, either. Not like that. I may not be able to read her mind anymore, but I can tell she’s just someone who’s feeling guilty, and there’s no way I’m going to take advantage of that. No way I’m going to feed from her when she’s so freaked out by the idea that she can barely get the words out.

So even though every cell in my body is screaming for me to drink from her, I shake my head. And say, “You don’t have to do that. I already told you, I’m fine, Grace.”

“I know I don’t have to do anything,” she answers. “I’m just saying that if you need to feed, I’m here for you.”

“Fine. Thank you. I’ll keep that in mind.” I know I sound abrupt, but fuck. What am I supposed to do when all I really want to say is, Yes, please.

Her face closes up at my tone. “I’m sorry if I overstepped. I wasn’t trying to—”

Fuck. “It’s fine, Grace. I appreciate the offer. Honestly. But I’m good.”

Her big brown eyes search my face, looking for I don’t know what. For the first time, I notice the gold flecks at the very center of her irises. They’re beautiful. She’s beautiful, stubborn chin and all.

“So,” Grace says in a voice that’s filled with forced cheer. “What do you want to—” She breaks off at the sight of Arnst running across the clearing, waving his arms like he’s trying to guide an airplane in for a tricky landing.

“Grace! Hudson!”

We both leap to our feet, but this time I don’t bother to wait for Grace as I fade across the meadow, my heart pounding in my chest. “What’s wrong? Are Maroly and Tiola okay?”

“They’re fine,” he gasps out, bending over to brace his hands on his knees while his lungs work overtime trying to suck in air.

I have trouble believing that. If he was running out here fast enough to be gasping for air, something is wrong. Very wrong. I just don’t know what it is yet.

“What is it?” Grace asks as she comes running up behind us.

I shake my head but note he’s carrying a large rucksack over his shoulder. Something uneasy moves inside me at the sight of it. I don’t know why it makes me nervous, but it does.

Arnst’s gaze goes wide as he gasps, “I’m so sorry.” Which I’m nearly certain is code for you’re totally fucked.
