It’s the funniest bloody thing I’ve seen in a long time. Even before Grace looks at me and says, “A little help here, Hudson?”
“Actually, I think Smokey’s got it well in hand,” I tell her, leaning back against the nearest tree to enjoy the show. “Don’t you, girl?”
Smokey yowls what I’m almost certain is an agreement before turning back to Grace and yelling at her some more.
“Okay, okay, Smokey. I get it!” Grace holds out a placating hand, but the shadow ignores it. “I already apologized to him. Can you get off my back already?”
Smokey hisses in response, which has Grace narrowing her eyes and hissing back.
“She does know that we’re friends, right?” Grace asks.
The question itself—and the look on her face when she asks me—surprises me so much that I respond before giving myself a chance to think about it. “Is that what we are, Grace? Friends?”
Her startled gaze collides with mine. I don’t know why she’s so surprised, though. Not when at least fifty percent of the time I’m convinced she wants nothing more than for me to disappear or die.
“I thought we were,” she whispers.
Which gets her another hiss from Smokey. But now the shadow’s tirade isn’t so funny anymore. And neither is Grace’s discomfort.
“Smokey!” I call the shadow with a firmness that has her turning to look at me. “Leave Grace alone.”
Smokey gives one loud, annoyed caterwaul in response and then turns her back on me. But she does stop berating Grace, so I’ll take it.
“Thank you,” Grace says a little stiffly.
I want to apologize, to tell her that of course we’re friends. But the truth is, I don’t know what we are. And I don’t think she does, either. Clouding the issue with some false sentiment isn’t going to make it any easier to understand.
“Do you want to head back?” I ask.
“I thought you said Arnst told us to take the afternoon off?”
“He did.” I shrug. “I just didn’t know if you wanted to spend that afternoon with me.”
“I’m pretty sure that should be my question,” she says. “I did cover you in leeches, after all.”
“Good point. I’ll see you later.” I start to walk away.
“You should at least take a water,” she calls after me.
I burst out laughing. I can’t help it. There’s the Grace I know and sometimes like. Never giving an inch even when she’s trying to make amends.
“What?” Her look is as innocent as it gets. “It’s hot out here.”
That’s a bunch of shit, and we both know it. I don’t call her on it, though. Instead, I take the proffered bottle of water and sink down in the grass next to her—much to Smokey’s very vocal disgust.
