Ten minutes later, I’ve finally convinced myself to sit on the bed—which is big progress, considering I haven’t wanted to so much as touch it since I got in here—when Hudson knocks on the door again.
“Come in,” I call, and when he opens the door, I continue. “You don’t have to keep knocking. This is your room, too.”
“I know. I just didn’t want to…catch you unaware.” He pauses in the doorway, looking almost innocent in the soft cotton sweatpants and T-shirt.
I laugh despite the nerves that are still lurking just under my skin. “I promise to change in the bathroom and not in here, okay? Then you don’t have to worry about walking in on me naked.”
As soon as the words leave my mouth, I regret them. Instead of lowering the tension between us, I’ve just ratcheted it up. Because now we’re both thinking about me naked, and that is absolutely, positively not what I wanted to have happen right this moment.
Hudson looks discomfited for a second or three, but then he clears his throat and says, “I’ll keep that in mind. And make the same promise—about myself, I mean.”
“Okay, good.” An awkward silence descends between us, and I blurt out what’s been on my mind ever since I walked into this room after dinner. “You can have the bed.”
“No.” Hudson looks insulted. “You can have it. Obviously.”
“Why obviously? You just spent a year sleeping in the only bed—”
“That’s not quite the same thing,” he interrupts, and there’s a flush to his cheeks that I’ve never seen before.
“Oh yeah?” I can feel myself finally relaxing as we settle back into our normal sparring routine. “And why is that exactly?”
“Because you’re the one who divided the room! You gave me the bed. I was just following the rules.”
“Oh, nice try,” I tell him with a snort. “You slept in the bed the very first night, before I divided the room.”
He looks at me like he has a response to my argument on the tip of his tongue, but in the end, he just sighs as he leans a shoulder against the nearest wall. “Just take the bed, will you? I’ll sleep on the floor.”
It’s as close to admitting defeat as I have ever heard Hudson Vega come, and part of me wants to savor it. God knows, it may never happen again. But at the same time, I’m just sick of this argument. I’m tired, I want to go to sleep, and it seems ridiculous to make him sleep on the hard wood floor when this bed is big enough to fit four people comfortably.
Which is why, despite all my nerves from earlier, I hear myself saying, “You know, we’re both reasonable, adult-type people. We can just share the bed.”
