I’d noted that there were only four doors in the small hallway when Maroly first brought me upstairs, which means their little farmhouse has three bedrooms and a bathroom on the second floor. It felt inhospitable to suggest we’d need separate bedrooms, given there was obviously only one guest room.
I drop the pillows and go back to the dresser to rearrange the clothes. Again.
I also straighten the pictures on the wall—both pretty decent abstracts—lift and lower the blinds until they fall in a perfect row, arrange the curtains several times so that they block as much outside light as possible, smooth out the bedspread, and fold my dirty clothes.
Then I rearrange our clothes again.
Because apparently sharing a room with Hudson has made me completely neurotic.
It’s ridiculous to freak out like this. Absolutely, positively ridiculous. I mean, we shared the lair together for more than a year, and we survived. Why should sharing this room for a night or two be any different?
It shouldn’t. But for some reason, it is. It really, really is.
Maybe it’s because we had that one almost kiss before everything went to hell.
Maybe it’s because, since I read those journals, I can’t hate Hudson the way I used to. I can’t even be afraid of him. Not really.
Or maybe it’s because the mating bond with Jaxon is gone.
It shouldn’t matter—it doesn’t matter. I love Jaxon. I want to be with him forever.
But what if what Maroly and Arnst said at dinner is true? What if the barrier between our world and Noromar only opens once every thousand years?
What if that one time was to let us through?
What if there is no fine print, no escape clause, no magic that can change things?
What if Hudson and I are stuck here, in the Shadow Realm, forever?
It’s a terrifying thought, one that has me pacing back and forth as I struggle to stave off a panic attack for the second time tonight.
Somehow, I managed not to freak out at dinner when the subject first came up. And I managed to avoid thinking about it after dinner when I took my shower. But now that I’m here in this room with nothing else to do but think, it’s impossible to ignore it anymore.
Impossible not to wonder if my entire life has changed forever.
Impossible not to wonder if I have to start all over in another new place.
Impossible not to wonder how everyone I love are doing back home. If I’ll ever see them again.
