If so, how did the dragon make it across with us? And why did he stop chasing us once we made it to the light? Where did he go? He can’t have just disappeared. At least he couldn’t in our world. In this world, though? Who the fuck knows?
This family seems completely unconcerned by the dragon, which is the only reason I agreed we could stay here. I don’t know why, but I think we’re safe from the dragon in this little farmhouse, and safety isn’t something to ever not appreciate when you have it.
“Hey, Hudson. Are you okay?” I turn to see Arnst striding down the hall with a pile of clothes in his hands and realize I’ve been standing outside the door to my room—to Grace’s and my room—for who the fuck knows how long.
“Yeah, sorry. Just thinking.” I knock briskly on the heavy wood door and try to pretend this doesn’t feel weird. Sharing the lair was one thing. Sharing a tiny bedroom feels a lot more intimate, and I don’t know how I feel about that.
“These are for you and Grace,” Arnst says, handing me the clothes in his hands. “There should be enough here to get you through a couple of days, so bring your clothes down when you get up tomorrow morning, and we’ll get them washed for you.”
“Thank you. I’ll let Grace know.”
He points to a door that’s about ten feet down the hallway. “There’s the bathroom if you want to take a shower. Otherwise, I guess I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Thank—” I start again, but Arnst just claps me on the back before walking away.
“Good night,” he calls over his shoulder.
“Good night,” I call back, just as Grace pulls open the door.
“Did you knock?” she asks.
“Yeah, I didn’t want to…” My voice trails off as I note the only thing she’s wearing is a white T-shirt.
It’s a large T-shirt—one of Arnst’s, judging by the way it hits on her lower thigh—but it’s still just a T-shirt.
For a second, my mind wanders into “what is she wearing underneath” territory, but I lock that shit down fast. The last thing either of us needs is for me to be thinking like that, especially not when we’re sharing a room. And especially not when she’s made it clear—in behavior if not words—that she thinks almost kissing me was a mistake.
But, even telling myself that, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Grace has very nice legs. And very nice everything else, too.
Fuck. This is never going to work. Living in the very large loft together was one thing. Trying to coexist in this tiny room, with its very big bed, is something else entirely.
