“Who’s Mayor Souil?” I ask, wary of involving too many people in Grace’s and my mess. Especially people I haven’t met—and whose trustworthiness I can’t judge for myself. The last thing I want is to cause more trouble, for Grace or for these three people who have been so kind to us.
“His village is just over the mountains to the east,” Maroly answers. “And honestly, it might be the only place safe for you from our queen. If I were you, I’d travel there as soon as the queen’s army passes to the south.”
Tiola whines, “But I wanted them to stay with us. Do they really have to go?”
Arnst and Maroly exchange another glance fraught with tension, and I find I’m holding my breath. Is the queen really this dangerous to foreigners? Maybe it has something to do with Richard’s story after all—maybe she thinks we know a way through the barrier. If only.
Maroly continues. “I’m sorry, honey, but I think your new friends should probably leave as soon as it’s safe to travel. They can stay and visit for another day, two at the most. We wouldn’t want Queen Clio to find them, would we?”
Tiola shivers. “She’s mean.”
And that answers that. If anyone can scare this strong-willed little girl, she must be the devil herself.
I start to ask Maroly another question about the queen, but a glance at Grace has me changing my mind. It’s subtle—very subtle—but for someone who has spent the last year with little else to do but stare at her, Grace slightly shaking her head definitely doesn’t go unnoticed.
I make a mental note to ask her why later. Then say, “Thank you very much. We appreciate it.”
“Really appreciate it,” Grace echoes.
“Are we done talking about boring stuff?” Tiola asks.
We all laugh, and Maroly reaches one slender purple hand out to cover her daughter’s where it rests on the table. “And what is it that you want to talk about?” she asks.
“I want Grace and Hudson to sleep in my room!” she says. “It can be my first slumber party.”
At her announcement, Arnst chokes on his water. Which makes perfect sense to me. There’s not a semi-decent father on either side of the barrier who is going to be okay with letting a strange man—vampire or not—sleep in a room with his vulnerable ten-year-old daughter.
“Grace and Hudson will be sleeping in the spare room,” Maroly says in a voice that brooks absolutely no argument—from any of us.
Tiola must hear the finality, too, because she doesn’t argue with her mom. She does pout into what’s left of her dinner, however.
