“Actually, um, most humans like to keep their blood inside their skin as much as possible. But if I cut myself or something, I’ll be happy to show you.”

Hudson gives me another look, this one even more “WHAT THE FUCK” than the last one. And I totally get it. This might be—and by might, I mean probably is—the weirdest conversation I’ve ever had. And considering it wasn’t that long ago that Hudson spent an entire afternoon bird-calling at me, that’s saying something.

“How does he drink your blood if you keep it inside you?” Those inquisitive eyes focus on Hudson for the first time.

“Oh, um. No, he doesn’t—”

“Yeah, I don’t—” Hudson says at the exact same moment.

We both break off, awkwardness springing up between us like a barbed-wire fence. One that’s got a whole lot of high-voltage electricity shooting through it.

Tiola looks back and forth between us for a second, then rolls her purple eyes with such exaggeration that I’m pretty sure it can be seen from space.

“You guys are funny,” she tells us. Then, without another word, she turns around and walks right back toward the tall field of plants.

“Should we…?” I look to Hudson for advice, but he just shrugs.

“Are you coming?” Her voice floats back to us on the wind.

Unless we want to stand out here in the middle of nowhere, we don’t exactly have a choice. But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t feel a little apprehensive following her into a field of periwinkle-colored plants that grow taller than Hudson. Not when every second of my moviegoing experience has taught me that bad things happen in places like this.

But it’s not like there are a lot of other options out here. Plus, Hudson’s with me, and I’m pretty sure together we can defeat whatever one small purple child can dish out. Please God let that be true.

Tiola moves fast and assuredly through the field, only stopping to glance behind her once to make sure that Hudson and I are keeping up. We are, but my fatigued muscles are burning pretty badly, and I’m praying that we get to wherever she’s taking us as soon as possible. Unless where she’s taking us is bad, and then… No, even if that’s the case, I want to get there fast.

Come what may, I’m ready for today’s little jaunt to be over.

I relax a bit when, after about four minutes of walking, Tiola takes a sharp left turn, because at least I think that means we’re heading straight toward the farmhouse. And chairs.

And her parents, hopefully? Or at least someone who can tell us where we are and point us in the right direction. Although, if we have no idea where we’re going, I’m not sure there is a right direction.
