“Of course he does,” I interrupt with a sniff. “I’m surprised he doesn’t walk around with one of their riding crops, too. Old-world style.”

“Oh my God! You are such a snob.”

It’s my turn to give her a look. “I’m a centuries-old vampire prince with more money and power than any one person should have. Of course I’m a snob.”

“Wow. Way to own it.” She shakes her head as if surprised.

I don’t know why. In all the time we’ve been trapped together, I’ve never pretended to be something I’m not with her. Not once. “People should always own who they are, flaws and all. The fact that I happen to have more flaws than most doesn’t change that.”

Grace doesn’t say anything. Not that I expect her to—unless she’s pissed off, afraid, or plotting revenge, she tends to err on the side of kindness. It’s one of the things I like best about her.

We walk for more than a mile in silence, and as we do, I can’t help growing more and more curious about where we are. Originally, I put the dark, purplish cast of the world around us down to it being early morning. The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon in front of us.

But the closer we get to the mountains—and the sun coming up over them—the more it’s apparent that the colors around us have nothing to do with dawn at all. And everything to do with the landscape of this world.

Right now, it feels a little bit like Mars—except, instead of being red, the soil is dark purple. And so is the sky. And so is everything else around us. Rocks, hills, even the sun—they’re all made up of different shades of purple, from the lightest lavender to the deepest violet. The mountains ahead of us still look black, but as a purple gecko-like creature with six legs runs over my foot, I start to side-eye the hell out of them, too. I could be way off base here, but I’m pretty sure when we get there, we’re going to find that they’re a midnight violet instead of black.

I have no idea what any of that means, though. I’ve been racking my brain for the last half an hour, trying to figure out where we might be. But I’ve got nothing.

Not just because of the color—though the purple thing is strange—but because even the terrain doesn’t seem normal, for lack of a better word. It’s rough and rocky, with jagged edges and steep inclines that lead back down into sunken, cratered valleys.
