  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

“And you’re not hearing me, Row,” Creed growls, annoyed. “That’s our shot. There are no boats parked here and the odds of swimming up to a moving patrol boat and gaining the upper hand are slim. But blending into the group and slipping through with none the wiser, that sounds better to me. I’d rather a society made up of rich assholes not know I made it out.”

Jiro nods. “I agree. They won’t know we left. The quieter our escape, the better.”

“Going out with a bang isn’t the way to go,” Creed adds. “We get one of those patrol boats, they’ll know immediately. We nab a yacht and they’ll be too drunk to know we took it. It’s been eight days. They’re probably getting comfortable in their compound over there. No one will know.”

Everyone grows silent. In the end, it’s me who speaks up. “I guess it’s settled then,” I murmur. “We get over to the rocky cliffs and see how far of an expanse it is. We swim across somehow and get the fuck out of here.”

I’m met with four nods, and I sigh. Shit. Sharks? That doesn’t sound like my idea of fun but neither does sticking around here to find out what happens. I’ve never been a quitter.

I just hope I don’t end up getting eaten by the predators in the ocean rather than shot by the ones on land.

THIRTY-THREE

As close as the tower is toward the end of the island, we reach the rocky cliffs within five hours. It does take longer than I expected but it’s because of how rough the terrain gets. The jungle leads up to a brutal cliff that isn’t so much a straight drop off as much as a pit of sharp stone. Row says it’s manmade, a purposeful design to keep Prey from lingering here, but the jungle has taken much of it back, coming up right to the edge of the small cliff. We’ll have to climb down the jagged rocks just to get in the water and that’s not including the sharp rocks that the waves crash against. Fuck, this is starting to look crazier and crazier.

“It’s supposed to be about a half mile,” Row says as we all stare over at the party. “I don’t know how quickly we can make it, but it’s a hell of a trip.”

“And you’re certain there’s sharks here?” I ask, looking at the water as if I’ll be able to see them.

“One hundred percent. The Hound Society feeds them at irregular hours to make sure they linger around waiting for food. They’re pretty much trained to go after things dropped in the water.”

I sigh, preparing to turn back around. “Fantastic. So then we need to figure out what exactly we plan to. . .”
