- ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jiro appears in the flashlight beam with a grin, clearly trying his hardest not to laugh. With the butt of his machete, he smacks a couple of the large crabs over the head, crunching them enough that they stop moving, before he lifts them in the air. “Good protein,” he says as I watch with horror, trying to keep away from the running crabs. I don’t know what kind they are but they’re massive and there’s a whole herd of them.
“Yeah, that’s right, fuckers,” Creed snarls at the crabs as they run away. “Try to eat me, I’m going to eat you,” and then he chases after them with the flashlight, planning to get a couple more. It plunges us into darkness except for the soft moonlight streaming in from the entrance. I try not to panic at the thought of the crabs coming back and picking away pieces of us in the night.
I stare at the giant crabs Jiro brings over to the fire pit we’d dug and lays them out, ready for us to eat in the morning. “You sure we can eat that?”
He nods. “Coconut crabs are delicious.”
Hesitant, I settle back down into my spot. “Someone should stay awake and make sure they don’t come back to eat us in our sleep.” I assume Jiro fell asleep if they got past him in the beginning. I don’t’ blame him but it’s dangerous for no one to guard the others. If needed, I’ll take watch early.
“I was awake the whole time,” Jiro says, raising his brow. “And now we have food.”
I snort at his answer, realizing he’d purposely let the crabs in. “You had to wait until it pinched him?” My only answer is a smile and I find myself laughing at the situation as Creed comes back with two more coconut crabs. “You’re an asshole, you know that?” I tell Jiro.
He shrugs and settles back down. “Now we have a feast and I got to hear your laughter,” he says, his eyes on me. For some reason, I blush at the intensity there. “I say I was a successful guard.”
The next time I fall asleep and dream, it’s off the two men sitting near me, one sleeping, one awake. In my dream, we’re definitely not fighting, not to survive. We’re fighting for the upper hand, for which of us will be on top. I wake up hot and bothered, annoyed that I can’t act on it with so much danger around us.
Fuck this island. I can’t even get laid properly.
Add “horny” to my list of grievances.
FIFTEEN
Three Days. Three fucking days and I’m tired of this island already.
