But it does make us realize how much more careful we need to be. Achilles explains that though there’s likely been cleanup efforts here, either at the direction of the Hound Society or the government, the chances of radiation poisoning are high and that sounds like a fucking terrible way to die. Creed mentions your skin falling apart and melting off and that’s all I need to hear. No radiation poisoning for me. No thank you.
We decide to stay in the facility for the night. It’s protected, we have a lock on the door, and Creed finds a stash of old blankets and sleeping bags for us to lay on. Some of them are covered in mildew but there’s enough for the four of us at least. Which means for once, there’s a little bit of comfort while sleeping on the ground.
I’m lying on my sleeping bag flipping through a different journal, when I come across more information about the nuclear test they ran here.
“It says there were two bombs dropped on this island,” I announce, reading the sentence again to make sure.
“They dropped ten on Bikini Atoll,” Jiro says, clearly remembering the information from somewhere else. “Perhaps, we’re lucky and the radiation is not a problem here anymore. The wildlife is certainly thriving.”
“I haven’t seen no two-headed birds yet, so I’d say we might be good,” Creed adds with a shrug.
“That means nothing,” Achilles argues. “The coconut crabs on the Bikini Atoll apparently drink radiated water out of coconuts and they’re fine.”
I shake my head at the thought, at how much shit we’re finding ourselves in. “Great,” I grunt. “We’re being hunted by assholes who call themselves Hounds. We have to worry about other Prey assholes killing us. And now we could get radiation poisoning. I’m starting to think I really pissed someone off and Karma is out to get me.” I look up at the ceiling as if I’m talking to someone in the sky. “If you’re listening, I really didn’t mean anything when I called that lady at the supermarket a cunt. She was being a real Karen and I was trying to help.”
Creed laughs at my inappropriate prayer and settles down. We take turns in the night keeping watch even with the locked door.
You can never be too careful when predators and Prey roam the wilderness.
Especially when everyone sees you as a nice, juicy rabbit.
