  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

We keep moving until we find a small stream that we’re able to fill our canteens at. We choose to camp there for the night, both taking turns to watch each other’s backs while the other gets a few hours of sleep. The forest comes alive at night, the sounds of it loud in my ears after the ringing stops. It would almost be peaceful if not for the other sounds.

In the distance, every now and then, I hear a gunshot and I flinch with each one. By the time the sun rises, I’m no longer flinching at them, desensitized, and we continue on our way.

Pretty sure, if I have a guardian angel, she drinks and is off somewhere wondering where I went.

Yeah, that sounds about my luck.

TEN

The sun barely rises in the sky before speakers we can’t see crackle to life again. Though we’re in the forest, the sound comes from somewhere close enough by, I wonder again at how they’re watching us, how they’ve hidden speakers. I search the trees for the source of the sound and find nothing. They must be hidden really well.

An alarm sounds, like something from a war zone, before that same smug voice comes on laughing as if this is just all fun and games.

“If you’re lucky enough to be alive, congratulations, you’ve survived your first night. Give yourself a pat on the back.”

“I’d like to give him a pat on the back with a knife,” I snarl under my breath. Whoever the fucker is, he just reeks of smooth condensation.

“Don’t congratulate yourself too long though,” he laughs. “Prepare yourselves, Prey. The Hounds have entered the game.”

The crackle stops and disappears, leaving us standing there none the wiser of where it came from. Hounds? We’re going to be hunted by dogs? Or is that some stupid name they gave to the hunters?

“Fantastic,” I grumble. “This just keeps getting better and better, doesn’t it?”

Creed is staring up at the trees, as if looking for the speaker the same as I was. “You ever go gambling and see someone put a million on red?” he asks.

I scrunch my face up. “What does that have to do with this?”

“My point is,” Creed continues, turning in circles. “It’s always the rich bastards who play those kinds of games, who don’t care who they hurt in the process, you know.”

Pausing, I watch as he reaches a tree and starts to climb. “You think we’re playing some billionaire’s game?”

“I think we’re playing more than that. It isn’t just one,” he grunts as he pulls himself higher. “Something on this big of a scale, there’re friends involved.”
