He hesitates but nods slowly a second later. “Yes.”
I look away from Row and meet Achilles’ eyes. I don’t hesitate this time. “Kill them.”
“Billie—” Row tries, no doubt trying to save my soul or something, but my soul was already tainted on Prey Island. I’m ready to embrace the corruption. It’s the only way to fight back against the Hound Society.
“Kill them,” I repeat, harsher this time.
Achilles pulls his hunting blade and slits Greg’s throat first before moving on to Lila. Their bodies convulse and bleed out quickly with the alcohol in their system. They never get a chance to scream. They don’t get to beg for mercy. After all, they never showed mercy to their victims. At least in this, I’m saving someone some trauma and giving others justice that the system never will.
I step back so their blood doesn’t get on my dress, my chin tipped up, my eyes hard.
“Don’t look away,” Jiro purrs in my ear, his fingers stroking up and down my forearms from behind me. “Watch your becoming.” His words are like a promise in my ear, a caress. This must have been what it felt like when he joined the Yakuza, when he accepted what he was.
So I do as he says. I watch until their bodies still. I watch until the blood goes from spurting to a gentle flow, before just oozing. Only when the twitching stops and their bodies pale do I turn.
No guilt fills me. Not a single ounce of it.
Down with the rich.
Down with the Hound Society.
It’s time for the Prey to rise. . .
FORTY-SIX
“Are you sure I look okay?” I ask, fluffing up my hair as much as possible. The strands are still wet, and I can’t do much more than fluff and finger comb it, but I’m hoping I look like some sort of washed up mermaid or an early 2000s babe.
“Beautiful,” Row responds. “Every eye will follow you.”
I scowl. “That’s bad. If I’m the face like you say, I can’t have so much attention.”
“Well then don’t look so fuckable,” Achilles says with a raised brow.
“How the fuck am I supposed to do that? I’m literally not wearing anything fancy!”
Row shrugs. “Except for a five-thousand-dollar dress.”
I blink. “Five thousand dollars. . .” I look down at the dress I’m wearing. “For a fucking nightgown?”
“It’s Dior,” he offers, as if that makes it somehow better. “Besides, don’t get me started on the diamonds in your ears. With the cut and size, I’d wager my inheritance they’re worth much more than the dress.”
I like nice things just like the next girl but for the price of this single dress, I could have bought a thousand dresses. And the earrings? The rich are so wasteful.
