- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
I grin up at him with blood trickling from the corner of my lip, creating an image he’s not prepared for. Freya is the goddess of love, sure, but she’s also the goddess of war, and if I have to bleed for my revenge, then so be it. “Because you’re going to pay for that,” I reply with a tilt of my head.
Everyone moves at the same time. After this long together, we’ve developed some sort of synchronicity when it comes to fighting. I duck and go for the center. Jiro goes to the right, Creed to the left. Row pulls his rifle and picks off one of the goons in the back. Achilles comes up the center with me, his knife out as he slashes at the other goon. Within seconds, only Loyd stands there, stumbling back as the five of us advance on him.
He trips and falls backward in a way I hope that jagged rock goes right up his ass. “Please,” he begs, and the asshole literally pisses himself at the expressions on our faces. I wrinkle my nose in disgust at the smell of it. “Please. Doesn’t a goddess have mercy?”
It’s Jiro who hands me the gun. It settles nicely in my hand, a heavy, solid weight that feels like a promise. Is this how Medusa felt when Aphrodite gave her the gift of power? Was this how she felt each time she turned a new man to stone?
I study the man who brought me here, the reason I was dropped into this hellhole. He asks for mercy? When has a goddess ever been merciful to such swine?
“No,” I answer him. “The time for mercy has long since passed.”
The gun in my hand feels like it belongs there.
“You don’t have to—” Creed begins, thinking I’m hesitating because of the time it takes me to think about the shit stain in front of me. But I want to. I’ve never wanted to do something more than what I’m about to do.
Before Creed even finishes his sentence, I raise the gun and fire off a single bullet. Loyd falls backward, a bullet hole right in his head. His brains splatter against the rocks behind him, a feast for whatever animals find him. I hope the crabs pick his bones clean. I hope he rots here on this island. I hope he goes to Hell and remembers the rabbit who sent him there.
I look up at Creed’s shocked face and press the gun against his chest. “I never said I was good,” I tell him.
Then I lead the way back into the jungle where we can camp for the night and figure out what to do next.
Sometimes, when the wind blows in the right direction, I catch a sent of Loyd’s body beginning to rot. Each time, despite the smell, I smile.
