  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

As the ship pulls away, the engines straining with not having been properly warmed up, I watch as the guards stop firing at us and back away, revealing a man in a suit and a mask. I know who he is instantly despite having never seen him before, the one Row spoke about. The Grand Master of the Hound Society. The mask is cut strangely, like a geometric wolfhound baring it’s teeth. As he watches us pull away from the port, I stand tall, making sure he can see me before I flip him the bird.

I can’t see his face, but it feels as if he smiles.

In response, he lifts his hand and blows me a kiss.

A warning, a threat, and a promise all wrapped into one.

FIFTY-ONE

They notified the boat guards. As we pull away from the port, the first one appears and tries to slam into us. Only because Jiro has some sort of superhuman skills when it comes to driving a boat do we avoid being sunk just off the coast of Predator Point. Creed and Row fire at them, sending the guards leaping from the boat, but it isn’t the end of our problems.

They come from everywhere and nowhere, appearing from around Prey Island on various types of boats. Some are just small boats men buy to go fishing. Some of them are larger speedboats that threaten to take us out, and as Jiro opens the engines all the way and speeds up, we whip past them, firing at those who get too close.

Creed is bleeding from his wound, the arm weak and held against him. He’s going to need help digging it out. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks. Achilles is bleeding too but not nearly as badly. I’m trying my best to hang on despite my aching feet and body as Jiro dives left and right, the big ship handling better than I expect. It isn’t until we go past Prey Island and enter open waters that things change.

The bullets stop. The boats pursuing us start to ease off. They watch us as we speed away.

Frowning, I call down to the others. “What are they doing?”

Row relaxes and eases his gun down to the side. “They’re calling them off.”

“Why?” Achilles asks, clearly untrusting.

“We’re in open waters. If they keep giving chase, it’ll draw too much attention from other islands.” Row meets my eyes. “We’re free now.”

“Are you so certain?” I ask, knowing this isn’t over. The Grand Master knows who we are, knows where we live. The Hound Society has unlimited resources to come hunt us into the real world. Are we really safe?
