- TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
Achilles immediately starts wrapping it around Row’s leg as tightly as possible in the hopes it’ll stop the blood, but it won’t erase the smell. It’s not going to help that at all. This isn’t the plan. Fuck! This isn’t the plan!
But we have to stick to what we have.
“Everyone back in,” Jiro says before he gently dips his legs into the water and starts to drop back in.
I don’t want to. God, I really don’t want to, and it takes me a few long seconds of psyching myself up before I straighten my shoulders and shift around on my small raft, careful not to break the reeds. With bravery I don’t know I have in me, I gently ease back into the water, my foot thumping against something that swims away. The warm water surrounds me again, terrifies me, but this is the only option. We have no other choice. The patrol boat is approaching fast, and we only have so much time before it’ll be upon us.
I meet Row’s eyes. “You’re going to have to get back in the water,” I say, my voice level despite the wild pumping of my heart.
His face turns the same color as the reflection of the moon.
Terrified. Haunted. As pale as death.
FORTY-THREE
We’re only halfway there. There’s still a quarter mile until we reach Predator Point, a patrol boat is approaching fast, and Row is bleeding from a minor shark bite that’s going to turn into a major one if we’re not careful, but we’re out of options. The guns won’t fire with so much water in them, we don’t have time to shake them out. Even firing them right now would sound the alarm at the compound.
There’s only one choice.
“You have to get in,” Creed repeats, understanding the same thing I do as he eases into the water, as slow as possible. When he grimaces, I know he’s touching sharks, know they’re bumping away from him.
“But I’m bleeding,” Row rasps. “The sharks—”
“There’s no choice,” Jiro spits. “We’re running out of time.”
I thought I was brave getting back in the water, but watching Row take a deep breath and slowly ease into the water with a bleeding leg makes me realize he’s far braver than I’ll ever be. The dark water around us is rife with movement beneath the surface. For all of our sakes, I hope it’s just a school of fish. False hope. I know better now. I’ll never swim in the ocean again.
