He turns, and in turning and wobbling because of the alcohol he’s already drank, he bumps shoulders with another Hound nearby.
“I’m terribly sorry. . .” He begins, but his eyes zero in on the woman before him, her hands in Jiro’s as she spins and tries to hide her face. But she was a second too late. “It can’t be,” he whispers.
“The whiskey?” I ask, trying to distract him, trying to keep him on task, but I see it in his gaze. That recognition hit home when he looked her in the eyes, before she could hide them away.
“Prey!” he shouts, and the party goers all turn in confusion at his shout. “There is Prey on Predator Point!”
“Father, you’re drunk—”
“Prey!” he shouts again, pointing his finger at Billie. “She’s here! Freya is here!”
“Fuck,” I growl under my breath, and meet Billie’s eyes. I barely jerk my head, telling her to get out, to run, and as the compound starts to descend into chaos at the shouts being passed around, she kicks off her heels and grabs Jiro’s hand. Together, they start to run.
“Row!” my father exclaims. “You’re a Hound now. Get them before they kill us! Go get them!”
I raise my brows as I watch Creed and Achilles follow after Billie and Jiro. I meet my father’s eyes, unflinching.
“You’re right. I am a Hound now,” I say, tilting my head to the side. “But I will never be the son you wanted, father. You wanted a murderer you could control, but this Hound is feral. I won’t be your beast any longer.”
He stumbles back a step at my words, as if in fear, but I really know it’s shock. My father doesn’t fear me. He never will, not when he remembers me as a boy with bruises from his cane.
An alarm sounds in the compound, alerting me that we’re in some deep shit now. Without waiting another moment, I turn and rush after Billie, running through the partygoers, too many thinking I’m giving chase rather than just following them to the boat.
They think me one of them. They don’t realize I never was even if I now wear their title.
Even if I howl my triumph as I run.

BILLIE
“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” I repeat to myself as we run, splitting the crowds as we cut them with our urgency. Jiro shoves people out of the way, his form not that intimidating. But Creed, when he appears beside me, splits the crowd better than any of us can. When they see this big motherfucker coming at them, the rich move out of the way, afraid to be tackled and barreled down.
Achilles appears on his other side, his eyes hard as he runs.
