  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

“I’ve heard rumors about something like this, but mostly, they were whispered in hushed voices, most too afraid to speak too loud in case someone overhears them,” Jiro says, drawing both of our eyes.

I pause. “Rumors? Of this place?”

He nods. “The announcer called it Prey Island, and the only time I’ve ever heard that name, it was in conjunction with The Hound Society.”

Creed frowns and focuses on Jiro fully. “I’ve heard that name, but I don’t know where.”

Jiro nods. “I’m sure you have if you served in war. Their name is no secret, but anything else about it is. Think of it like the boogeyman,” he tells me. “A story to scare people, but in my. . .circles, it’s whispered about in fear. Even the criminals fear the Hound Society, not because of who they are but because of their influence and what they’re capable of.”

My eyes widen. “Like the Illuminati?”

“Something like that.”

His words sink inside me and the more I think about them, the angrier I become. Whatever this Hound Society is, it’s bullshit. Fuck whatever boogie man illuminati shit this is. I didn’t sign up for some dumb secret society game.

“So, this secret society just kidnaps people and hunts them down, and we were lucky enough to be picked. Fan-fucking-tastic,” I groan, scrapping my hair back off my sweaty forehead. “How do they pick?” I ask. “And who belongs in the society so I can write them a really nasty letter when we get off this island?”

“I have no answers for either of those questions, little rabbit, but judging by the majority of the group flown in, they choose challenging foes. Whoever is hunting us, it isn’t meant to be easy for them.”

I try not to think about how ominous an entity called the Hound Society is, but it’s difficult. I’m imagining Chad’s in silver dog masks or people who wears cloaks and chant ominously over virginal sacrifices, but that’s just the movies. I’m sure they’re a little more sophisticated than that, right? And why the fuck would anyone choose me to drop me out here? Someone is clearly having a good laugh and playing a sick joke on me.

“I guess it’s a good thing I’m not scared of the wilderness,” I grumble as I push my way through the forest behind them, thinking too deeply about stupid societies and the men who create them.

Jiro smiles at my words and it nearly stops my heart. “Good fortune indeed.”
