- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
For a moment, I consider not telling him I even have the pistol. It’ll be insurance in case he decides to turn on me, but the more time I spend with him, the more I understand how genuine he really is. Creed isn’t my enemy, so I carefully pull the handgun from my pocket and hold it up.
“Just this,” I admit.
He smiles. “I saw the hesitation, Billie, and I understand. If it makes you feel better, I have a shit ton of weapons on me and I can give you a couple more.”
He even has a military grade rifle slung on his back, but I shake my head. “I trust you.”
As I tuck the handgun away, I’m reminded again of the man who’d given it to me, of the way his eyes had tracked me. Now, he’ll be an enemy.
“This place is fucked,” I grunt. “Should we go find some water?”
Together, we start moving further inland, hoping for a stream of some sort, but if all else fails, there should be some water in some plants we can drink, right?
God, Bear would be so proud of me right now.

“So,” I start as we walk through the trees. “You said you were a Navy Seal?”
We haven’t run into anyone else in a while so I assume it’s safe enough to talk. Every now and then, gunshots echo across the island but clearly, it’s big enough for there to be plenty of space between the Prey and those who will eventually hunt us. The island must be big enough to make the game interesting. If it was me, I’d choose something sizable.
Creed nods where he walks beside me. He has to duck every now and then because of his height and the trees. He’s a big ass guy, broad, intimidating. He probably made the best Navy Seal.
“Sixteen years,” he answers, and in that answer, there’s echoes of a past he isn’t proud of.
“Can’t you retire at twenty? You didn’t want to do four more years and get a guaranteed check from the government?” Plenty of military guys come into the club. Some are respectful but most of them are assholes. Then again, many of them haven’t seen war. Clearly, Creed has. Something tells me Navy Seals don’t get put on desk jobs.
“Sixteen was too many already. I couldn’t stomach another four.”
His voice is solemn, and I know he’s definitely seen some shit. As far as men to team up with go, I feel like I scored the jackpot. Experience with war, survival skills, sexy, I’ve got it made. Just look at those tattoos. I’d love to see what they turn into beneath his shirt.
“I get that,” I murmur, and I do. I can’t imagine signing my life away to the government, following their orders.
