  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

I hold my breath, waiting for the asshole to stop stalling and pull the trigger. Before he can squeeze it down, a different shot rings out, making my ears ring. Blood splatters across my face and I jerk, immediately feeling my body as if I’ve been shot, but I’m okay. Fuck, I don’t feel like I’ve been shot. Shouldn’t you feel it? A blossom appears on the man’s chest where he still stands over me. It spreads outward, like a flower blooming under rain. He falls forward and I have just barely enough time to roll and avoid him collapsing on me completely. I expect one of the others to appear after having shot him, but I’m shocked to find the one they called Hawthorne standing there, his eyes wide on the body now lying in front of me. I pop to my feet when I realize the other two have been disposed of and it’s just us and the final Hound again.

Hawthorne drops his gun with a clatter to the ground. “I think I’m going to be sick,” he says, a British accent slightly apparent beneath the horror.

Jiro moves forward, to finish the job, to stab him, I don’t know, but I find myself rushing forward and stopping him.

“No, wait,” I growl, blocking them from shooting the man. After all, he’d saved me.

The Hound chooses that moment to lose his lunch all over the forest floor at my feet.

Great. Just fucking great.

“That’s disgusting,” Jiro comments, staring at the man with zero emotion on his face. Seriously, how could anyone tell how grossed out he is if he didn’t say anything?

“Well, it’s not pleasant, no,” I add, glancing at the Hound with a grimace.

Achilles steps closer. “We should dispose of him. He’s one of theirs.”

“He saved me!” I step in front of the man again, stopping anyone from shooting him without shooting me. “We can’t just kill him.”

“Sure we can. Watch,” Achilles growls, lifting his gun.

I grab the barrel and direct it away. “Stop it. This isn’t the time to not think things through. He could be an asset.”

Creed is the first to lower his gun. “She’s right. He could have intel that’ll help us.”

Achilles’ scowl deepens. “Fine. Go for it, but don’t come blaming me when he turns his back on you all.” His eyes meet mind. “I almost hope he skins you alive, rabbit.”

“Why do you always have to be such a dick?” I growl.

“Why do you always have to be such a—”

“Enough!” Creed growls. “The two of you fight like an old married couple. For fuck’s sake!”

“Like I’d ever marry him,” I mumble under my breath. When Creed glares at me, I hold up my hands in surrender and focus on the new guy.
