  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

Trailing off at the sight of the men behind us, the others glance over at me in worry before turning and finding what I see. My eyes go hard, and I freeze, not because I’m scared of the Hounds but because this one. . .

This one, I recognize.

“Loyd,” Row says, confirming it all. “Didn’t expect you to still be out here after eight days.”

Loyd, the man in question, grins. He’s surrounded by three other goons, each of them backing him up as if he’s their leader. “I haven’t captured my goddess yet,” he replies. His eyes go to me, taking in my clothing with disgust. Clearly, he prefers me in little to nothing. “I’m surprised you made it this long, Freya, but I’m not going to complain. Now I get to kill my goddess after all.”

My hand hovers over the pocket with my pistol, prepared for the moment I can pull it out. Loyd doesn’t hold a gun trained on us, but his goons do. Their rifles are pointed at our group, prepared to take us out with one wrong move.

“You’re a psycho,” I spit. “You know Freya is just a stage name, right? It’s not even my real fucking name.”

Visible anger flashes across his face. I’m not sure if it’s because I talk back to him or because I’m trying to break his little fantasy, but his meaty hands lift the gun at his hip and hold it steady.

“Shut up, Freya,” he snarls. “I’m going to kill you, but before I kill you, you’re going to come with me and I’m going to desecrate all that is divine about you.”

He takes a step forward and my men tense but the rifles on them prevent them from doing anything as Loyd begins to walk around me. He sniffs. “You’ll have to bathe first, of course.”

I spit on him when he reaches out to touch me. He doesn’t ever get to touch me again, fucking bastard. He rewards me with a hand across my face, backhanding me so hard, I taste blood in my mouth. This time, when I spit on the ground, it’s red.

Laughter bubbles out of my throat. I can’t stop it. It just starts to spill out before I’m full belly laughing. My blood is running down my chin and I wipe it with the back of my hand like I’ve done it a million times.

“What are you laughing at, bitch?” Loyd demands, looking at me as if I’m the crazy one. Who knows? Maybe I am. Maybe I’ve lost my mind on this island.
