- ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Now with the threat of the hunters in the game, whatever they may be, there’ll be more people on this island, and I’m already not looking forward to it. I’m hoping it’s people at least. If it’s dogs, I don’t know if I’ll stand a chance. As if to prove the point that we’re in a shit situation, we come through the trees and find two guns trained on us quicker than Creed can pull his gun. That doesn’t stop Creed from moving through.
“Duck!” he orders me just before he lunges.
I do as he says, ducking and covering my head when the gun goes off, the bullet spraying into the air harmlessly as Creed jerks the gun from one’s hand and swings it like a baseball bat. I look up just in time to see the second man coming after me, his gun trained on my head, his fingers on the trigger. The other guy fires off another round, barely missing Creed. The bullet embeds in a tree close by, bark exploding outward, but I can’t focus on him right now.
The man with the gun trained on me snarls, revealing gold teeth, and raises his gun. “Fucking bitch,” he spits.
Before he can pull the trigger, another man slips from the trees, silent. I shit you not, I don’t even hear the leaves crinkle. He’s as stealthy as a tiger as he slams a blade into the man’s skull and drops him, the guy hitting the ground before he even knows he’s dead. The other one hits the ground a moment later before Creed has the gun pointed at the stranger.
But he’s not a stranger to me.
I pull my gun and aim it at his face, those slanted eyes focused completely on me. The blood splatter on his once white shirt tells me he’s killed plenty. He doesn’t pull a weapon on me as he stares into the barrel of my pistol.
My hand begins to shake.
ELEVEN
JIRO
She holds the gun trained on me, ready to shoot, but I’m not afraid. I see it in her eyes, in the shake of her fingers. She remembers my help and doesn’t want to shoot despite the perceived threat.
But I’m no threat to her.
The other man, however, I’m willing to fight if need be, even if he holds a gun trained on my head.
Slowly, I lean forward despite the barrel of her gun remaining pointed at me, and flip the safety switch off on the side. She hadn’t even bothered to do so.
“If you’re going to pull a gun, be ready to use it,” I warn her, staring deeply into her eyes.
