- TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
In the end, we have five mismatched rafts that look like nothing more than piles of driftwood. Bits of branches and wood lay over top of each other, held together with woven palm leave rope and ingenuity. Small reeds stick through, some of them bent for effect and not capable of breathing through, but there are at least five that are straight and short. Worst threat is water splashing into them, but we’ll have others to switch to if necessary. Creed’s is the largest because we have to make sure, in the fetal position, it covers his whole body. If it comes down to it, each of us should be able to hide underneath of it, no matter the angle. The patrol boats will have lights if they come up on us and it’s best not even a single foot is seen. It’s all a risk. The idea that we could die doing this doesn’t make me feel good, but it’s a decent plan.
I just hope it works.
When we finish and fill our bellies with the last of our fruit and meat, we settle in a circle and just exist for a little bit. It’s strange to feel so close to these people who were strangers only nine days ago. In those few days, they’ve grown closer to me than anyone back home. It’s such a strange thing to think about, a bond forged so quickly.
“When this is all done,” I say, looking down. “What happens then?”
No one answers. I know what they’re going to say. We all come from different places, all have homes across the world. Creed lives in Tennessee. I live in Colorado. Achilles lives wherever the wind takes him. Row lives in one of his homes in Europe. And Jiro lives in Japan. We’re so far spread out. How could we ever hope to see each other again?
It’s Creed who says, “Let’s just focus on survival. The rest will come later.”
I take it as the answer it is, that there are no plans. This is just a brief interlude in our lives, a nightmare, but nothing more. No matter if I’ve started to love them. No matter if I want to keep them with me, nothing ever works out like that.
When we get off this rock, I’ll almost be sad to see the island go, but we have no choice. We’re going to get off Prey Island, no matter the cost. Fuck the people who took us and the first chance I get, I’m going to fuck them all over just like they fucked us.
I’m not scared of any Hound, no matter how rich and powerful, and the longer I’m on this island, the more I recognize the truth in my veins.
I was meant to make them suffer.
I was born to spill their blood . . .
