- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
I step into the opening of the gate and turn back for a final look at the four men that changed everything for me. They all stand watching me silently. Creed waves his hand, but the others stand still. I barely manage to keep the tears at bay as I get my last look at them, as I prepare to return to a home that won’t feel the same.
With a final tiny smile, I blow them a kiss and turn back around. Only when I know they can’t see do I let the tears fall. Only when I’m certain they won’t come after me do I allow myself to wallow in self-pity.
Even once the plane is in the air, I don’t breathe a sigh of relief. The Hound Society is watching.
They’re always watching.
And now the rabbit is defenseless, easy Prey for the Hounds to eat.
FIFTY-FOUR
It’s a thirteen-hour flight to Denver, one of the longest of my life. It drags on for forever and I eat and drink my fill on the flight until we land in the Colorado air I know again. Everything feels the same as it did before I left. The air has a slight chill to it, no different from practically two weeks ago. It feels like it should be a different season after everything I endured. It feels like there should be more people with me.
Paranoia fills me when I leave the airport and catch a cab back to my apartment. I feel like I’m being followed but every time I look, there’s no one there. That doesn’t mean they’re not. I’m not stupid enough to think they aren’t keeping tabs on me. The Hound Society has enough money to make my life a living hell. They could make me disappear for good and make sure I never speak a word. Instead, no one bothers me as I slip out.
I don’t know where my purse went when I was kidnapped so I have to go to the leasing office and get a new key, promising to pay for it as soon as I’m able to get my cards replaced. Luckily, it hadn’t been the first of the month when I was taken. No one was the wiser and they didn’t think I wasn’t paying. When I slide the key into the lock and push the door open, I stare into the darkness for a moment before I flip on the light switch.
Everything is exactly where I left it.
