- TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
The sound of someone barreling through the trees near me, not at all quietly, has me covering my mouth and nose and taking slow shallow breaths despite my racing heart, forcing myself to calm faster so whoever it is doesn’t hear me. The crashing stops just on the other side of my trees as someone clearly looks around, searching.
“Here, girly, girly,” the man says in a Russian accent. “Come out to play.”
And then he takes off running again, searching for me in a different direction. I slump when the sounds of his movements disappear altogether and gather myself as I press deeper into my hiding spot.
What the fuck is this? Why am I here?
And who do I have to kill to get off this fucking island?
FIVE
CREED
I picked the weapon I’m most familiar with first, but I took as many as I could fit on my body. The large Ak-47 feels familiar in my hands as I hold it against my front, just like an old friend. I’d spent years holding this gun in the exact same way, but I’ll admit, this situation is a new one, even if I’d been dropped in tropical war zones before. It’s been a couple of months since I’ve picked up a gun lately, but I know what I’m doing.
Sixteen years in the service’ll do that for you.
I’d managed to grab a couple of hunting knives and a machete before the announcement had been made, too, before I’d taken cover.
Fifty million dollars.
There’s an audible shift in the group of kidnappees the moment those words leave the announcers lips. The smug fucker speaking knew what he was doing waiting to make that after some of the men grouped together and started making plans to gang up against whoever is hunting them. Now, we won’t be able to trust each other, and other assholes will be thinking about the money.
Pathetic. But it was clever of the bastards in charge of this game.
Some sick fucks are making us tap dance to their tune, demanding we play no matter what, but fuck them. I didn’t spend so long in the Navy just to have my ass handed to me on an island in bone fuck nowhere.
I crouch down behind a large crate the moment the others start attacking, keeping my head low enough so I’m protected. No one pays attention to me even though my big ass stands out here. Most of them go for those closest to them, chasing each other into the trees. There’s got to be at least four dozen of us, but only five minutes after the announcement, there are six already dead by the now empty crates. All for money that no one will probably win anyway.
