  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

“Good morning,” he murmurs, reaching up to tuck a lock of hair behind my ear. It’s such a tender touch it nearly makes me cry. Leave it to me to find such great men when I’m near certain going to die. Life just isn’t fair.

“Good morning,” I rasp back before sitting up and stretching, if only to avoid the look in Row’s eyes. He has no business looking at me like that. He hasn’t even known me for as long as the others and yet he’s staring at me as if I’m the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen. “We should figure out what our plans are.”

The next fifteen minutes are spent waking up, preparing for the day, checking the supplies in our bags. I still have plenty of bullets left in my pistol but apparently Creed and Jiro are running low after the last fight with the Hounds. We’re going to have to stock up soon.

The five of us stand on the platform of the tower, staring out at the vibrant blue water and the island where our captors are busy enjoying themselves. They’re probably getting drunk and having the time of their lives, watching our deaths like watching a greyhound race.

“We need to get to that island,” I say, glaring at the place.

“No Prey has ever reached it,” Row replies. “The party goers are promised absolute safety, so they take that seriously. If the patrols and jagged rocks don’t get you, the sharks will.”

“The sharks?” Achilles repeats. “Ah, yes. I’ve heard stories that Bikini Atoll is diverse with ocean life. I suspect this island is no different.”

“How are we supposed to compete with sharks?” I growl, running a hand through my hair. “Maybe we can steal one of the patrol boats?”

“They would know immediately something was wrong,” Achilles points out.

“Then we find another place to go,” I say. “I can’t out swim a shark. I certainly can’t punch it in the nose and win.”

“Relax,” Creed says. “We obviously need to get to Predator Point. There’s no question about that. There are ways to avoid sharks and not draw attention to ourselves.”

“Did you not hear me?” Row grunts. “We’ll never make it there.”

“I heard you,” Creed says back calmly. “But what I also heard is they won’t be expecting their Prey to make it there. We do that, we can find a boat and get the hell out of here.”

Row throws up his hands. “You’re not understanding, Creed. Even if we make it onto Predator Point, we’d have to walk through the compound, among the rich, to even reach the docks—”
