  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

But I still feel like the rabbit. When a rabbit is cornered, when the Hound tears into her, she becomes more than just a rabbit. She becomes a fighter, tearing that Hound to shreds, fighting for her life. Surviving is never beautiful. It’s not some heroic feeling like they make it seem in the movies. It’s a dirty feeling. It’s tears streaming down your face as you do things you never thought you could do. It’s blood on your hands and smearing on the windows of the elite. It’s fear and numbness and anger mixing into one great ball in your soul. There’s no pride in being a survivor like this. There’s hope that things can go back to the way they were, that you can return to the life you lived before you were made to survive. Daydreams, but that’s all they are: dreams. There’s no returning to who you were before. There’s only the survivor left, the one you can’t trust, the one with stains on her soul.

There’s blood on my hands, but it doesn’t stop at my wrist. There isn’t any part of me now that isn’t stained and dripping. When you fight the monsters, you risk becoming one yourself.

This rabbit turned out not to be such easy Prey as they thought, and as much as Prey Island stains me, I stain it in return. But I’m not finished. I survived, and though no one will bleed enough to fulfill my version of justice, I’m still going to drain them dry.

I played their game, now they’ll play mine.

This little rabbit is going to eat the rich.

This little rabbit will swallow them whole. . .

FIFTY-TWO

“Should we go to the U.S. Embassy?” I ask, staring between them as we head toward Majura Atoll. Apparently, that’s where the international airport is, at least according to Row. “Well, for everyone but Jiro and Row,” I clarify. The U.S. Embassy won’t help either one of them since Jiro is from Japan and Row is from the United Kingdom. Still, it’s the beginnings of an idea. “Do they have embassies for your countries in Rairok?”

“Too many questions,” Creed grunts where he sits on the edge of the boat. “We don’t know what will come down on us if we name the Hound Society. We’ll be silenced before we get anywhere.”

Row nods. “The Hounds don’t mess around. You escape, you keep your mouth shut, or they’ll take you out anyways.” He reaches into his pocket. “But I do have a solution.” When he holds up the wallet he must have taken when he grabbed his suit, I blink in surprise. “I have connections and money and I’m a Hound now. We don’t have to go to anyone.”
