I’ll make them all bleed if I can.
FOURTEEN
Thirty minutes later, we come across a cave carved by nature into the rocky face of a small cliff. It’s a large opening and we take our time coming up to it, but once we find the cave isn’t inhabited by animals or other people, we decide to settle in for the night. Now that there are three of us, we can take the luxury of getting some decent sleep. Personally, I’m looking forward to having at least three uninterrupted hours. Eight would be better, but I’m not a choosy bitch right now.
Jiro takes the time to search for cameras in the cave, searching along the rock face by shining his flashlight he took from the crates to look for lenses. He comes back out with a single large camera that would have focused on the mouth of the cave. It would have seen us enter and leave but wouldn’t have actually watched us in the dark. I think that’s suspicious because who wouldn’t want to see inside? But in the end, when Jiro searches again and Creed joins in, they don’t find any others. Either they’re hidden really well or there really isn’t any more.
Once we finish the camera search, Creed gets to work putting together a small fire that’s masked by the cave. We can’t let it burn for too long without giving away our position to any Hounds or Prey, but it gives us the ability to quickly cook a couple of small birds that Jiro managed to take down with his knife. I’d watched the man literally sit at the base of a tree, wait for a bird to land near him, and throw it like a fucking ninja. The first time, I’d been blown away. The third, I was just amused that he seemed to be showing off. Each time he hit his target, he’d glance over at me and wink, as if to say, “look what I did.” It’s cute. . . in a weird survivalist killer kind of way.
Later, I watch Jiro pluck the feathers from the birds, I muse at how natural this all seems for him. Creed, on the opposite side of the spectrum, gathered fruits from the trees. I don’t recognize all of them but I can tell which ones are coconuts and bananas at least. Only once the birds are hanging over the fire do I decide to talk. I keep my voice low so it doesn’t echo too far. If someone finds us and detects the smoke from our small fire or my voice, we’ll have to fight our way out. As far as defensive positions go, the cave is a bit of a risk, but at least it’s cool and dry.
