  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

“Damn right it is,” he responds, a crooked smile on his face. “So, why philosophy?”

I shrug again. “Critical thinking is a huge part of it. You use that and study the way the world works. I decided I wanted to not only see the logical side, but I wanted to see all sides.”

“And did it help with that?”

Flashing him a smile, I bump my shoulder against him. “Yeah. Now I stay an exotic dancer instead of working for some rich asshole somewhere. Make more money though, so there’s that.”

“Can’t argue with that.”

Silence again. Some part of me wants to keep talking, to dig deeper into this man who went out of his way to come find me and protect me, but I’m also still a little distrustful. Why go out of his way rather than take care of himself first? I bet he could escape this island alone quickly if he didn’t have me in tow, and instead, he chose to come help me. Are there people with a conscience like that anymore? If I’m being honest with myself, if the opportunity to get off this island came, I’d take it, no matter what.

Though I might hesitate over leaving Creed behind now.

Maybe that’s his plan. It ensures that if one person finds a way off, the other does, too. It’s clever, but inconvenient. Still, his protection and training ins invaluable in this situation and he hasn’t done a damn thing to hurt me.

“First thing we should do,” Creed says, startling me from my thoughts. “We figure out just how big this island is, I think. We can crisscross, get an estimate, and we’ll also see the coast on each side in case there’s an easier way off. From my guess, there’s at least three or four dozen of us which means there’s probably at least one or two hunters for each of us. The bigger the island, the better chances of avoiding others we’ll have.”

“That makes sense,” I agree, nodding along. “We also need water. My throat is starting to get scratchy. Then we need food.”

“Look at you with those survival skills,” he teases. “You a hiker?”

“I wish,” I grunt. “I just watch a lot of Bear Grylls.”

“Well, shit, after this is all done, you’re going to have to write him a letter thanking him.” He grins. “Maybe I’ll write him one, too.”

Snorting at his words, we keep moving, watching the trees around us.

I start to trust him just a little more. I haven’t decided yet if that’s a mistake or not.
